We have three nights, 2 1/2 days in Garmisch (travelling from Rothenburg early morning) in mid-October. Since we can't predict the weather at this time, we will buy tickets day of hopefully being able to enjoy one of the adventures. Which in your opinion would be the most enjoyable and better bet? Zugspritze or Karwendelbahn?

The Zugspitze is an excellent trip. I have been there to ski and to tourist. If you are already in G-P the Zugspitze cog railway is next to the DB station, so as you say, you don't really have to decide until you get there. I have never been up the Karwendelbahn. If the weather turns bad you can always hop the train from G-P to Innsbruck (i hour and 20 minutes; as I did on a ski holiday when it was snowing too hard to see to ski).
