The Danube Gorge and Weltenberg Abbey

While on a Danube cruise we have the opportunity to visit the Danube Gorge and Weltenberg Abbey. We would appreciate any comments or suggestions on this as a day trip destination. Thanks

A while ago, I was considering a cruise on the Danube that had a stopover at Kelheim, but the cruise didn't stop long enough to visit Weltenburg Abbey. I could have made the trip to Weltenburg, but I would have had to find my own way to Regensburg and met up with the tour there. So if your cruise offers a side trip to Weltenburg, I'd say go for it.

I would go provided it does not rain out of tubs. The passage through the narrow gorge is wonderful, and Kloster Weltenburg has a on of those lovely Asam churches (colorful Bavarian baroque). Try their dark beer in the beer garden.

BTW, you cold do the tour on your own. From Regensburg (assuming that your cruise boat stops there; if it calls at Kelheim on its way down from Nürnberg, all the better) take a bus or train (with one transfer in Saal) to Kelheim, walk the short distance to the dock (Donaulände). The time table of the boats is here.
