The 2G is happening ~ wie ärgerlich

This is my little anti-virus rant... ok but also I need some insight.

I was planning on going to a concert when I first arrive in Germany, but sadly I emailed the venue and now their 2G rule is in place, and the operator informed me everyone will be maskless. Given that Germany just dropped this requirement in several places, I'm very hesitant to go now. (boo hoo). Is this really up to the individual owner/operator in regards to masks? I read in their newspapers that they had a superspreader event related to their 2G requirements and well sadly a concert sounds like a good superspreader event if everyone is singing (sad face). My friend and I are part-time germaphobes, ok maybe full-time ;0.

Do we know if this applies to museums? I'm not as concerned there (since things usually aren't crazy crowded like a concert) but I am curious.

I just returned from Germany two weeks ago. I observed 100% compliance to masks indoors at museums, restaurants, hotels and all public transportation. I saw very little mask wearing outdoors. I also was asked for my CDC card before I entered any indoor place. I am not sure sure about a concert as I did not attend one while I was there.

These rules differ from state to state, and they may differ from now to whenever you are going to be traveling. Right now, some states (Hamburg, Berlin, Hesse) have given restaurant owners and other venues the choice between 3G or 2G.

I am not quite sure why you are particularly concerned about 2G. It's actually safer than 3G because you will only have fully vaccinated (or recovered) people around. Yes, it is well known that Covid can be passed on even by vaccinated people, and yes, there has been a superspreading event at a 2G party, but, as was to be expected, none of those who caught it has fallen seriously ill.

If you personally feel safer that way, there is nothing wrong with you wearing your mask at a 2G event. But if no serious illness is to be expected, why make all people wear the mask?

they are talking about proof to enter places. It has been the 3Gs, (translated from German) which are vaccinated, tested, recovered. They are talking about removing tested, and the 2Gs are vaccinated, recovered.

All 3 words in German start with G.

3G - geimpft, genesen, getestet (vaccinated, recovered, or tested)

2G - only the first two. This usually goes with some additional freedom like not being required to wear a mask, or dancing being allowed.

The background being that everyone in Germany above the age of 12 has now had the chance to get themselves vaccinated. Aside from the children, there are very few people only who cannot get vaccinated due to medical concerns. Most of those who are still unvaccinated are so because they choose to be. It's not in compliance with our constitution to punish everyone with restrictions just to humor a few people who have made this decision of their own free will.

I'd feel so much better at a 2G event then a 3G event - even without masks.

Absolutely, especially considering the reliability of those test results. A friend had caught Covid in spring, and she was continually getting tested by her husband who is a doctor, so those tests were not done amateurishly. Even when she had a fever and was coughing like crazy those tests kept being negative. Only the PCR test turned out positive.

Exactly as Anna said on all counts.

I would say if you got BioNTech and it was awhile ago, a booster is probably not a bad idea (in consultation with your medical professionals), but ultimately consider that with the vaccine this would, for most people, be like getting the flu, which has always been spread at events like concerts. Of course if you have vulnerable people in your life, you might think twice about attending a concert.

There is no right or wrong answer here. Do what makes you feel most comfortable. Know that you can also check county infection rates on the dashboard at the RKI site. That might help.

What is required as proof of vaccination to enter Germany on a flight from the US ? Does the CDC card suffice, or is there some sort of digital or other pass you have to obtain?

My CDC card worked just fine at the airport and all indoor places I went to (hotel, museum, restaurant). There was the passenger locator form I also had to fill out and show at the airport so don't forget that.

Personally, I am happy they are switching to 2 G. It means more people will get vaccinated instead of relying on all of those free tests, which won't be free after Mon. the 11th.
Wear your mask if you like. People here don't care. They aren't going to yell at you or make fun of you. I put mine on if the street starts to look crowded or I am at an outdoor event/market that is crowded. Folks are good about wearing them everyplace else they are supposed to.
