Personally, I still daydream about lunch at Viktualienmarkt. Terrific scene, lots of food stalls to choose from, and it was some of the best food on the whole trip.

I agree with the above post re: Viktualienmarkt -- so many options.

For dinner, we actually love an Italian place called Vino e Gusto. It is tiny, so you def need a RSVP.

I'll third (?) Viktualienmarkt. For a nice lunch, there's a Wurst haus just to the right of the Hotel Am Markt, in a little courtyard. Also, for dinner, if you walk from Marianplatz toward the Hauptbahnhof (west, I think), there's the Augustiner-brau Ausschank. If you order the Maitjesfilet, first ask what is really is. I should have asked... And behind the Frauenkirche from the main pedestrian street, there are a few nice places with outdoor seating.

Personally, I like the Hoffbrauhaus, some on this forum don't like it, too touristy. I like the chicken or the flatiron steak. My wife and I love the atmosphere, it really is full of happy people.

When do you intent to visit Munich? From June 21 –July 21, 2024 the Tollwood Summer Festival takes place in Olympiapark. It includes a large number of very diverse food stalls from all over the world.

A visit to Munich should always include a visit to a Munich beer garden (weather permitting).
And of course you can also drink something different than beer. In a Munich beer garden you can bring your own food, but of course you can also buy hot and cold meals there.
A typical small meal in a beer garden is Obazda (a Camenbert-based spread) with a giant pretzel (Breze).

There is a beer garden at the Viktualienmarkt, especially here it makes sense to buy your food among the delicacies at the market and then eat in the beer garden.
Other well-known beer gardens are the Chinese Tower and the Seehaus in the English Garden, the Augustiner Garten in Arnulfstrasse or the Hirschgarten beer garden, the largest in Munich.
The Hirschgarten also sometimes serves another specialty, Steckerlfisch.
Steckerlfisch is a fish grilled on a stick. My prefered fish is a mackerel.

@Paul636
We will be there for the Christmas Markets but would like options for sit down dinners as well.

I don't know when you are going but I ate at the Munich Soup Kitchen in April and the curry soup was delicious big and filling. And yes, the Central Market allows you to buy food from different markets and then sit in the beer garden and have a beer with your food.

I just saw you will be there for the Xmas Markets. We go every other year. If you are staying in the OLD TOWN/MARIENPLATZ area, there are 3 Xmas Markets very close to each other - def eat at the Medieval Market - best food by far - don't miss the pizzas, the smoked sausage sandwiches and the cinnamon chimney cakes for dessert.

Well then, beer gardens are not an option.

But there is also the Tollwood Winter Festival on Theresienwiese. This is a kind of Christmas market with a much larger culinary selection than usual.

In terms of restaurants, there is a very wide choice from Michelin-decorated fine-dining restaurants to local corner pubs, with cuisine from almost everywhere. I suspect there are more Italian restaurants in Munich than Bavarian ones.

Of the Bavarian restaurants in the city center, I like the Andechser am Dom and the Augustiner Klosterwirt, both on the square in front of the Frauenkirche. Or you could try the Spatenhaus at the opera.

For inspiration outside of the usual, you can read the following article. https://www.eater.com/maps/munich-germany-best-restaurants
