We will be coming from Amsterdam into Munich airport at 9pm. We will probably be tired from the day's events. I understand that a taxi to our hotel in the city center is about 50 Euros.
Does this sound like the best way to do the link?

We weren't quite city center a few years ago, but I seem to remember ours being closer to 90 euro.... either way, I usually like to take a taxi when we arrive somewhere if it's a long trip or at night... in the greater scheme of the price of the trip, I'm fine with it.

This summer we came into Munich after a long flight and originally thought we would take the train into Old Town. After seeing the long lines for tickets and not having small enough bills for the train ticket machines we went with the taxi. So worth it. Maybe 65 Euros.
The SBahn (commuter train) leaves every ~ 10 minutes from the airport to the main train station (40-45 minute ride). A Partner-ticket costs about 24 euros and covers up to 5 people. The ticket machines take credit cards.
Whether it is worth the extra money to take a taxi from the airport is up to you of course.
I took a taxi from the airport to my hotel at the Marienplatz when I traveled alone 3 years ago. Cost was 60 euros. Worth it. The following year my husband and I traveled to Munich and we took the train.

No. As long as the flight arrives while the S-Bahn (until after 1 am) is still running, I can't imagine a reason why I would take a taxi into town.
Thanks for all the replies. If we are not too tired we'll look into the S-Bahn train. Otherwise we'll take a taxi.
There is also the airport bus operated by Lufthansa. The bus leaves every 15 minutes, and is only 10.50 euros if bought in advance. It will take you right to the train station in the center of the city. Not door to door to your hotel like a taxi would be, but definitely a cheaper option. We always use the bus when we go to Munich, and find it to be very convenient.
A lot might depend on where your hotel is in Munich.
A taxi would take you right to your hotel. As far as I can figure from the MVV website, a taxi from the airport to town (Marienplatz) would cost about 48€ plus 0,60€ per bag. That's by the shortest route, but the driver might take a faster, although longer and more expensive, route.
The bus would only take you to a stop near the Englischer Garten or to the Hbf. If your hotel is not close to one of those stops, you could probably take a taxi from there.
As I remember, a taxi from our hotel two blocks to the Karlstor S-Bahn station in 2013 was rather expensive because of the circuitous route our taxi had to take because of all the one-way streets in the old town.
With an MVV Group Day Ticket, your transportation, not only by S-Bahn into the city center, but from any S-Bahn stop to or near your hotel to the hotel by U-Bahn, Tram, or Bus will be covered. Use the Journey Planner on the upper left of this page to plan the trip. Enter "flughafen" for the From and select "Flughafen München" from the menu. Use the hotel's actual address. Be sure to use European format for the date and 24 hour time. The planner will tell you what combination of public transportation and walking you will need to get to your hotel.
I had to add another day to our hotel and asked the hotel manager about this. She said the S-Bahn is good and only a 5 minute walk from the Marienplatz hotel we have. I think we'll do that.
Under normal circumstances I avoid taking a taxi from the Munich airport to the hotel, which is a Pension at Munich Hbf. Taking the S-Bahn #8 will do since I can figure out how to access the Pension once I've arrived at the station. Arriving at 9 pm at Munich airport, I'd take the S-8, direct and easy.
Thanks Fred. I've got that S_Bahn #8 in my notes now.
Don't wait for the S8. There are two S-Bahn from the airport to town, the S1 and the S8. They come into town in opposite directions. The S8 is faster by five minutes but it leaves 13 minutes after the S1 leaves, so if the S1 is ready to leave, take it. You'll get to the Hbf faster. In other words, take whichever S-Bahn leaves next. You'll even get to Marienplatz sooner (by 1 min) by taking the next train, whichever it is.
However, if you are going to München Ost (East Bahnhof), to catch the train to Salzburg, for instance, the S8 is the one to take.
Les, it sounds like you want to get off at the Marienplatz station, not the Hbf.
Got it. S1 or S8 to Marienplatz. Thanks.
If you are leaving downtown Munich for the airport, I'd take the S8. From Marienplatz, the trains headed for the airport leave from different levels. So you have to pick to be on one or the other. There is only one minute out of 20 when the S1 will get you to the airport sooner, so just pick the level (First Underground level, Gleis 1, Richtung Ostbahnhof) for the S8. From the Hbf, both trains leave from the same station, from opposite sides of the platform, so you CAN just take the next on leaving, but if you get on the wrong end of the S1, you end up in Freising rather than the airport (the train splits in Neufahrn), so just take the S8 to be safe.
