We were driving from Regensberg to Munich a few days ago and kept coming upon fields of seriously tall green plants.I mean 30 ft..It did not look like a winery to me. My husband couldn’t figure it out either. Anyone got an idea?
Hops! You were driving through the famous Hallertau region of Germany and its hops harvest season this month!
Did it smell like beer? My hops do.
Yes!!! You’re right! Thank you for the clarification. Makes sense with October fest coming!
Hops in Bavaria is a big thing and it will be sold almost everywhere in the world. But harvesting now has nothing to do with the upcoming Oktoberfest although this is a very romantic idea :-)
We didn’t see hops growing in Kent in the UK but did ask about the buildings with unusual conical roofs we kept passing. And I learned a new four letter word for a hops kiln…an oast. (Spellcheck just doesn’t want to believe that one).

Something like that? (Pictures from Spalt in southern Franconia, another well know hop region)
