We are staying with friends in Ulm for 10 days in June. We would like to take some day trips from there. I was thinking of a trip on the Danube to Regenberg, also maybe some driving trips to the south to see the castles.
Do you have any suggestions for Ulm itself, or for day trips?
We are a couple, middle aged, but still hearty. Our friends have a baby and a toddler.
Legoland??
Hi,
Nice, your friends are most likely to show you the famous cathedral in Ulm, one of the biggest in Germany, "das Ulmer Münster"
Day trips from Ulm...Munich, Augsburg, Sigmaringen an der Donau.
Well there's the climb up the cathedral tower in Ulm. That will wipe you out for a day. I'll bet your friends will be able to give you the best suggestions, but I think the Bodensee area is under-appreciated by Americans.
Ulm isn't too far from Hechingen, where you can visit Burg Hohenzollern. This is the ancestoral home of the kings of Prussia, and the rebuild castle functions as sort of a family monument. It's quite spectacular from the outside, if a little less so inside.
Burg Liechtenstein is also nearby and worth a visit. And if you have a car, you may as well check out the Kornbühl, which is a scenic hill with a chapel on top. You often see this on postcards.
Regensburg is one of my favorite cities in Germany but a long day trip from Ulm: about 2.5 hours driving and 3.5 hours by local trains. (High speed trains are not much faster.)
Tübingen is about half the time for either mode of transportation. Traveling by train might allow everyone to enjoy each other's company a bit more.
