Hello & thanks in advance for your tips. We’re looking for additional things to do in the surrounding areas outside of Munich. We already have day trips planned to Zugspitze and Daucau, plus a short trip to Nuremberg, so we’re covered for those locations. We don’t have a car, and the weather is supposed to be rainy. Any additional tips on getting out of the city without a car in rainy weather,
as I’m concerned that we have too much Munich City time planned? Thanks!
It appears from your other posts that your trip has been moved to September?
You won't know if it will be rainy until much closer to the time.
As far as getting out of Munich to escape the rain probably the best thing is to look at the forecast the day before and see which direction the weather is coming from and go where it was.
September is traditionally a fairly dry month in southern Bavaria.
Or is this a different trip?
Day trips to Augsburg and Regensburg. Also, Garmich, Berchtesgaden, Salzburg are great, but best done by staying there.
Thanks. Our trip is this week, so we have a good period the (bad) weather. We’ll be coming in from Austria.
A bit off the wall but a relaxing day. Take the 07:30 direct train to Bolzano, will be a scenic ride. You'll arrive in time for a long lunch and a walk around for a few hours. 18:30 direct return.
Never been to Bolzano but the downtown area looks like my kind of place in photos. I was once in nearby Merano and that was something.
Salzburg can easily be done as a day trip by train. Also nice if you have time to stay there, but definitely a rewarding day trip otherwise.
I echo others comments about Salzburg. It’s a great day trip or stop.
I was skeptical because, even though I like Sound of Music, I didn’t want to go some place where that was all the place had to offer. Salzburg, however, has much more and was among our favorite things we did when we were in Bavaria in March. This should be one of your side trips or stops if you’re in the area.
I find it fascinating that one considers Nuremberg. the Zugspitze or Salzurg near Munich :-) But I know, considering the dimensions in the USA, it is near by.
For me, the nearby area is the foothills of the Alps, Lake Tegern, Lake Starnberg, Lake Ammer, Wasserburg am Inn (which I highly recommend) or the Blue Land near Murnau.
This American-English couple lives in Munich and makes a lot of day trips with the DB. Maybe there is something you like: https://www.youtube.com/@NearFromHome/videos
I agree with you, Mignon, and anywhere 'near' Munich is likely to have the same rainy weather conditions. I thought Lisa's priority was to keep out of the rain. There are museums, of course, or a long train ride to Bolzano, where the weather looks lovely Wednesday onwards. Unless the train itself is leaking, the ride should be very enjoyable.
Myself, I usually stick to the rule of about a one hour radius from where I am based, further if the drive is nice or some place I really want to see. I always rent a car but take the odd bus and train when it is practical.
or a long train ride to Bolzano
Now I had to see what you're talking about, because I had completely overlooked Bolzano :-) But yeah why not. How far is too far is quite individual.
But basically one should keep in mind that the foothills of the alps are one of the rainiest areas in all of Germany. So when it rains in Munich it can of course be nice weather on the northern side of the alps but probably not. On the south side of the alps there is a completely different climate.
It's often better to be north of Munich to escape the rain in Munich. But as always there is no guarantee :-)
