Suggestions for Munich/surrounding area in early Nov?

Hi all,

So we have our trip booked and will be arriving to Munich on 10/30 in the early afternoon and departing on 11/8 at noon. We plan to stay at the Munich Marriott on Berliner the entire duration. I likely will not be renting a car.

I've booked a couple tours so far on GetYourGuide: 11/1 - Neuschwanstein/Linderhof and 11/3 - Sound of Music 2pm tour in Salzburg.

We have a fairly decent list of things to do/ideas within Munich so I'm not too worried about figuring out what to do there. I have my work conference 11/5-11/7 so my wife and two kids (9 and 7) will be on their own and will have to find things to do around Munich.

Of course, I'd like to take full advantage of the trip and visiting the surrounding region if it's possible and viable. It seems Zugspitze and access to the alps will likely be limited during that period of time so that's likely not going to be viable?
Are there other places we might want to consider daytrips to though with Munich as our home-base? I was thinking we could maybe do something along these lines on 11/2 and or 11/4. 10/31 might be a bit rough as that's our first full day in (and recovering from jet lag etc). We likely would meet with a Munich Greeter and keep that day low-key. 11/5-11/7 my wife and kids will have to find some low-key things to do around Munich (probably museums, etc).

Any tips and suggestions would be appreciated!

Someone had mentioned Brixen/Bressanone in the German-Italian alps area which really intrigues me. The closest I've been would be Locarno and Lugano many years ago and I really enjoyed my time in both places.

I've also heard good things about Innsbruck and Garmisch.

Best thing about Garmisch and Salzburg is that they fall under the Bayern ticket area, which would really help us save on travel costs considering these would be day-trips. Maybe the best option at this point is just to go to Garmisch on Saturday - not sure if the cable car to Zugspitze would be open that day though?

Have the wife take the kids to Therme Erding one day. They will love it.

@KGC, I keep hearing about that place! I may have them go on one of the conference days especially if the weather isn't great.

Otherwise, this is what the itinerary is looking like so far:
10/31 - Munich city exploration
11/1 - Neuschanstein and Linderhof Grayline tour (from Munich)
11/2 - Garmisch-Partnach (Zugspitze & Partnachklamm) & Mittenwald (explore the town and maybe visit violin museum)
11/3 - Salzberg Austria (Amphibious Tour at 11:15am & Sound of Music Tour at 2pm but considering the Red Bull Hangar and or Salt Mine tour instead of amphibious tour... not sure what would be better for the kids)
11/4 - uncertain and open to suggestions for this day (including visiting a nearby must-see town for another daytrip - Regensburg, Bamberg, Bad Tölz?)
11/5 - free for the day in Munich up until 4pm, when my work events start. My wife and kids will be meeting the Munich greeter at 2pm (I'm not sure if I will join or not but probably)
11/6 - my work conference from 9am-5pm. Wife and kids will have to find something to do
11/7 - my work conference from 9am-4pm. Wife and kids will have to find something to do. And then we need to pack for our return flight the following day

I'm not sure you're going to want to take the amphib tour in NOV. It will be cold and wet. The kids will like the Red Bull Hanger.

In my mind Bamberg is too far for a day trip from Munich. Nuremberg is doable. Also Augsburg or Ingolstadt or Regensburg.

Bad Tolz is an interesting choice; it's small, attractive, and until the early 90's the US had a large presence there.

You may also want to consider Prien on Chiemsee, which is a direct train ride and very nice if the weather is good.

All of that being said, do explore Munich; there's just so much to see there. Have the kids visit the Deutsches Museum one of the days when you're working. They could easy spend hours there.

Thanks @KGC!

I will likely cancel the amphib tour. Will definitely consider the Red Bull Hanger.

So right now I am leaning towards renting a car Nov 2 through Nov 5. Nov 3rd I am strongly considering Berchtesgaden Salt Mine and Konigssee Lake after. And Nov 4th I would move Salzburg to - Sound of Music tour we would still do at 2pm but earlier we would take the time to explore the city (or do the Red Bull Hanger).

This may be an option if Konigssee doesn't work out or maybe as an added stop along the way.

We will have a full day of Munich on 10/31 and most of the day on 11/5 (My work events start at 4pm that day). We will hopefully have some time on 10/30 to explore as well. The conference ends 11/7 at 4pm so we might have a little bit of time afterwards but probably not too much as we will need to pack to head back the following day.
