I'm looking for suggestions for lodging. We will be in Munich the second week of October. I'd like something affordable, safe, clean...you know the drill...we are traveling with friends - both families are comprised of Mom, Dad and two teenage girls. We're grateful for any recommendations!

My go-to place in Munich is Pension Lindner -- clean, quiet, centrally located next to the newly pedestrianized Sendlingerstraße. Marion is a wonderful hostess and puts out a great breakfast each morning.
In May last year we stayed at a Rick Steves recommended place, Hotel Blauer Bock: http://www.hotelblauerbock.de/?lang=en. Clean, good location and parking for our vehicle.

Adding another vote for Pension Lindner. Clean, affordable, great location, and we loved the breakfast.
We stayed at Pension Lindner as well (and it was great!) but I don't think it is best suited for your group. Have you considered Airbnb or an apartment?
I would recommend Hotel Uhland. We stayed there with our two children. It was great. The breakfast that was included was excellent. We had a car and they had free parking. They were within easy walking distance to the subway system. We will be staying there again this September.

Another vote for Hotel Uhland. It's on a quiet residential street and they do indeed serve an excellent breakfast.
