Suggestions for itinerary

We are booked to fly to Frankfurt in July with the goal of making our way to Paris. Due to a change in plans we now have more time to get to Paris. We have 9 days to work with and are thinking 2 nights in Frankfurt to get acclimated and do a day trip on the Rhine. We could either go right to Paris and spend the remaining days there or find somewhere in the vicinity to spend 2-3 nights before going to Paris.

We are in our early 50's, no kids and doing trains only. We like to have time to explore/walk around without a break- neck place of being in a new town each night.

And we've never been to any of the places mentioned above.

What would you suggest?

The ideal place for 2-3 nights is the Rhine - a day trip there from Frankfurt is completely insufficient.

So you could spend whatever time you have in mind for Frankfurt in Frankfurt, then take a train to one of the Rhine towns. Alternatively, if you don't have any particular sightseeing goals in Frankfurt proper, the Rhine towns are so close to FRA airport that you COULD easily just hop on a train at the airport train station and get there rather quickly for your first 2/3 nights - and just get acclimated there. Bingen, the gateway town to the Rhine and the place where you would want to start a river cruise, is only 48 minutes from FRA by direct train.

Lots of sightseeing options to the north along the Rhine - and very easy to get around by train. Run through these links to check it out:

There are easily enough sites to see in Frankfurt to fill up a few days and there are many nearby towns that are worth your time too, depending on your interests - Marburg, Limburg, Seligenstadt, Büdingen, Gelnhausen, Idstein, Bad Homburg and then the many towns along the Rhein - Eltville & Eberbach Monastery, Ober-Wesel, St. Goar, Bacharach, Boppard.
