Suggestions for a 3 day/4 night stop (Germany/Luxembourg)

Hi all! We will be visiting these cities this summer for 3 or 4 nights in each: Berlin, Munich, Rothenburg, Bacharach (2 nights), Fussen. I have a window of 3 days/4 nights in between Rothenburg ob de Tauber and Bacharach that I am in limbo about, though.

I had planned to go to Luxembourg—and still can—with no specific itinerary except to visit a new country. But now I'm not sure because I don't even know what we'd see or do there. Without a RS guidebook, I'm lost. lol

We have a nice balance now of two bigger cities and a few quieter, more laid-back towns in Germany.

I would love some input on whether we should stick with my original Luxembourg plan (and what we should do/see) OR if there are other suggestions.

NOTE: We are two active hikers/history/culture lovers (mom and 18-year-old son) traveling with just a carry-on each by train. At this point, all other parts of the itinerary are set in stone and unchangeable.

Thanks in advance!

This tells me you might need some time north of Bacharach on the Rhine and on the Mosel River. The area is well served by train:

Rhine:
Rheinburgenweg (Rhine Castle Trail) on the west bank. Hike the clifftops from town to town.

Remagen, north of Koblenz: Remagen Peace Museum covers theWW II conflict over the Remagen Bridge

Marksburg Castle, just south of Koblenz in Braubach - an intact medieval castle with a 1-hr tour

Boppard: Nice old town, great little chairlift ride to a great lookout point

Cologne: Interesting city for a day with Germany's most-visited landmark, the Cologne Cathedral. Museums too. Lies north of the rail map boundaries I provided.

Mosel:
Trier, Germany's oldest city. Roman History.

Burg Eltz, near Moselkern

Bernkastel, Cochem, Beilstein, Winningen: handsome old-world towns, each a little different.

Hiking/biking is possible almost everywhere. River cruises too.

You may want to hit Bacharach first before changing to a base or bases for the above destinations.

Rothenburg isn't worth three nights. I love the place, but it's small. Nuremberg is a better choice.

I suggest you add Trier to your itinerary. It's historic, beautiful, and has plenty to do. Plus it's a 45 minute train ride from there to Luxembourg city, and the train goes several times an hour.
