We will be flying into Munich and will be renting a car. We will be spending 8 nights in the Dolomites and have four nights open. We are thinking of stopping for those four nights on the way to the Dolomites. Would love suggestions on where to spend those four nights.
We stayed in Mittenwald a few nights and found it charming. There’s an excellent violin museum there that also covers the town history!
There are dozens of possible 4-day itineraries in Bavaria. What season will you be there? What kinds of things do you like to see and do when you travel? Is there anything specific about Germany or Bavaria which interests you?
Some sites for generating ideas...

(Regensburg is quite close to MUC airport.)

Thank you Russ. I will take a look at your links. We will be there middle of June. We will have a car. We love the outdoors but also enjoy history. We fly into Munich but really didn't want to stay in the city. We have thought about going to Salzburg but have not committed to that.
We have decided to stay in Berchtesgaden. We will have a car. We will have three days to explore. We would love any suggestions and information on experiences others have had when visiting this area.
History: I'm sure you will read up on Salzburg, Mozart, Hitler's Eagles Nest, etc. Below are a few suggestions in Berchtesgaden's general vicinity that might be worth an outing or a stop enroute...
Burghausen Castle is over 1,000 years old but just 80 minutes from B'gaden by car.
Hohenwerfen Fortress in the Austrian town of Werfen can be reached in half that time from B'gaden. The setting and scenery are stunning. Take a tour and do the falconry show. Hohenwerfen was the setting for the film classic Where Eagles Dare.
Prien, on Chiemsee Lake (which some Bavarians call the "Bavarian Ocean" - heh heh) is in between Munich and Berchtesgaden. People go there for recreation but also to visit Herrenchiemsee Palace on Herreninsel, an island in the lake. It's Bavarian King Ludwig II's 19th-century response to the palace of Versailles. A ferry from Prien gets you to the island.
We loved hiking in the area and a boattrip on Lake Königsee.
Walks in the Klausbachtal near Ramsau to Bindalm and or walk the Wimbachklamm(gorge) and Valley
or
Drive to Gasthof Dürrlehen in Maria Gern have lunch and do some walking from there

Awesome suggestions. Thank you so much. Now time to research and plan!!! Excited!
We've stayed in the area a couple of times, the last time a number of years ago in Untersalzburg (on the opposite hill to the village of Berchtesgaden). We stayed here for a week: http://www.gleixner-berchtesgaden.de/ferienwohnung1.php
Hope to return to the area again one day. However, I prefer Bad Reichenhall as a base, or even Ruhpolding. Bad Reichenhall sits in the valley, has a pretty central core, a nice layout, a thermal bath, a good selection of restaurants. Ruhpolding is a pleasant place, has an attarctive chuch and a fabulous little cemetery.
What Russ and Ewe suggest are plenty to get on with. The scenery in Ramsau includes this famous view of St Sebastian church: https://images.fineartamerica.com/images-medium-large-5/ramsau-bavaria-church-st-sebastian-hans-peter-merten.jpg
There are also ice caves in Werfen, not far from the castle. Re Where Eagles Dare, it's a good and fun watch: the opening credits are great and may be enough to draw you in. Derren Nesbitt is wonderful as one of the bad guys (whatever happened to him?). This is a free and legal stream, if you care to watch:

Make reservations well in advance.
Looks like the Grünsteinstüberl is closed.
Well, we have stayed in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden 5 times at the Pension Mayringerlehen. Love the place (real organic farm, plenty of animals), the hosts, the Grassl Family, and the gorgeous alpine scenery.
We have never run out of places to see and things to do in the area.

Ps. We LOVE the Dolomites!!!
A quick-n-dirty pronunciation guide for place names around Berchtesgaden...
Berchtesgaden itself is commonly butchered by non-German speakers. To get close: stress the first syllable and begin with "bear", not "burr".
BEARk-tes-gah-den
Königssee = KUR-neex-zay
You'd think Salzburg would be straightforward, but no, all those German speakers seem to think it sounds like what you see below; the first sound is a "Z" sound, as in "zoo."
ZAHLTS-bwuck
How about a few nights in Munich if you haven't already visited? Hohenschwangau is a cute village with two great castles to visit near the German-Austrian border and a good overnight stop.
