Suggestions for 2.5 day stay over in Frankfurt

We will be flying into Frankfurt and staying for 2.5 days before flying out. We will be there June 22-24, 2026. Any hotel/area recommendations for where to stay and must see places? Thanks

If you look for landscape, wine and a nice town I recommend Rheingau and Wiesbaden, e. g. Eltville at river Rhine. Upper Mid Rhine Valley day cruise recommended.

If you prefer science I recommend Darmstadt with direct bus connection to FRA airport. Mainz has a nice and interesting old town.

Look for hotels around the Hauptwache area. Try Flemings City Center which is right next to an old guard tower built in the 1400s. Or, try Motel One which is near the Römer and the old town and most of the museums. Moxy is also near by. For high end, try the Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof or JW Marriott.

There is a good fest happening by the Alte Oper, from 17-26 June. Great wine and food at this fest.

What are your interests? Historic, art, scenery, markets, churches, nature? The more you tell us what you like, the better suggestions you will get.

Easy connection to the airport from here with the S-8 or S-9. Train every 15 min. and it takes 15 min. to get to the airport.

We quite enjoyed our stay at the Kimpton hotel in Frankfurt at the end of November 2025. It is an easy walk from an S-Bahn station (S-8 line) - straight ride to/from the airport and only a couple of stops to the Central train station in case you do a day trip or two. Also, it was easy to walk around to lots of things in Frankfurt from the Kimpton. Overall we liked the location of the hotel, plus the room and service was great (can't beat the 5 pm free social hour either, lol).

We did a walking tour with Frankfurt on Foot which we quite enjoyed - our tour guide was really nice and gave great recommendations after the tour. One day we went to Mainz, which has a nice old town and the Gutenberg Museum and was about a 35-40 minute ride on the S-Bahn straight from the station near our hotel. Another day we took the train to Cologne for the day (it was a little over an hour) - I really wanted to see the gorgeous Cathedral, which did not fail to impress. We did an afternoon bike tour with Colonia Aktiv (https://colonia-aktiv.de/en/) and had a fantastic time. It was a great way to see the city and our tour guide, Christian, was wonderful.

Just downstream from the Rheingau region which Mark mentions is the Upper Middle Rhine Valley - also known as the "Rhine Gorge", which UNESCO has designated a World Heritage site. It's an area of great natural scenery, medieval castles, vineyards, and towns with old-world architecture. See outlined area on this map:

Mark mentions the day cruise, which is quite worthwhile but will probably require only a couple hours of your time. Board a cruise boat at the southern end of the gorge (in Rüdesheim or Bingen) and cruise north to St Goar (or St. Goarshausen) to view the most scenic part.

The cruise would be best to do on the 23rd or 24th, when all cruise boats are operating; some are idle on Mondays.

But there's much more to see and do in this area as well.

  • Try the wine: Most towns have wineries in town. Boppard, one of the larger old-world towns within the Rhine Gorge, has a good supply of these. The winery in the link below has a nice Weingarten and is just a few steps from the river and from the Boppard train station:

Because Boppard also has a wide variety of restaurants and hotels - some of them with nice views right on the nicely-developed waterfront, Boppard makes for a really good base town. Well, it's also because Boppard hands out passes for free train travel around the area to every guest that stays there.

  • A big highlight of Boppard's is the chairlift which takes you to the clifftops overlooking the town and the river gorge. Great views there, and a nice place called Gedeonseck where you can find light meals and/or some adult refreshments:

Some use the chairlift as access to additional hiking opportunities along the clifftops.

There are direct trains to Boppard from FRA airport.

Or maybe you want to go high-end with a castle-hotel stay in Oberwesel? Oberwesel is around 15 minutes south of Boppard.

There are other things to do and places to go in the area as well...

  • Bacharach and Oberwesel are nice old-world towns, both with walks you can take along the former fortifications that protected citizens from intruders centuries ago.

  • Koblenz, 15 minutes away from Boppard is home to Ehrenbreitstein fortress.

  • Trails run along both cliffsides of the gorge (Rhine Castle trail, Rheinsteig trail on the opposite bank) if you want a longer walk, and there are a few nice places to stop off at on the way as well.

I'd recommend you look into a stay at the Bellevue, on Boppard's waterfront.
