Suggestions for 2-3 Days between Boppard and Garmisch?

We are a party of 5. Two children age 7 & 8, myself my husband and my energetic mother of 68. We will be in Germany for 2 weeks flying into Frankfurt with a rental car. We are looking for suggestions for a stop between Boppard and Garmisch. We will be spending 4 nights in Middle Rhine and planning to spend 5 nights in Garmisch which leaves us a couple nights. I would like to break up the 5 hour drive from Boppard to Garmisch. With all the small towns we are already visiting we would like a medium sized city to visit. We arent into museums but love architecture, eating and new cultural experiences for our kids. Thank you for your time. We are completely open to suggestions, changes in destinations. Just starting in the planning process and those are the two places so far we are drawn to. Thank you!

I know you said that you aren't into Museums, however, the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart is one of my favorite museums. I am not even that big of a car buff. It does a really amazing job of weaving the history of the Car with what is going on in the world. The cars are beautiful, I wish one would have fit in my suitcase. There are all kinds of different vehicles from racing cars, to the first cars, to delivery vehicles, to emergency vehicles, to the Popemobile, to a car owned by Princess DIana, to busses, to futuristc cars. There is an English audio headset you listen to, and you work your way through the museum.

Unfortunately Mainz ...one of my favorite places in Germany, is too close to Boppard ( recommend the chair lift to Gedeonseck in Boppard ) . I agree with Susan.... Stuttgart and a visit to the Mercedes- Benz Museum (which we visited last Sept.) My husband & I ( both in our mid 70s) really aren`t that interested in cars so our plan was to spend an hour or two at the museum and then head to the beer fest, more our style ! Never made it to the festival as we spent over 4 hours at the museum.....loved it and I kept thinking how much I would have love to be there with my son and grandson. A wonderful town not far from Stuttgart is Schwabisch Hall which I highly recommend....beautiful and The Wurth Museum a must see.
