Suggestion for Traveling the Romantic Road from Fussen to the North

My wife and I are taking a 3 night trip along the Romantic Rd beginning June 6th and we'll spend the first night in Fussen. Where do you suggest we spend the next two nights? Any suggestions for hotels/accommodations? What sites do you suggest we see along the way? We'll have a rental car so we can stop or detour along the way.

The most important feature of the Romantic Road is not the road itself, just a nondescript, two-lane country road with slow truck and farm traffic, but the towns on it. I did the Romantic Road from Wieskirche to Würzburg in 2007 taking four nights (Landsberg, Nördllingen, Feuchtwangen, and Weikersheim. I spent a few hours a day going from town to town using public transportation (rail and bus); most of my time was spent seeing the towns.

My favorite town on the Road was Nördlingen, just south of Dinkelsbühl. I spent almost 24 hours there and was sad to leave. It's kind of a smaller, less-touristy version of Rothenburg, with a Wehrgang that you can walk along on the nearly intact wall.

As for Lake Constance, my favorite town is Lindau, an island town on the east end of the lake.

we drove parts of the road last year and visited the towns south of rothenburg obder tauber , as mentioned previously, they were interesting and nice to visit. but we stayed for a few nights in rothenburg and really enjoyed it. we happen to be there for their annual festival. lots of people BUT you could easily walk some of the back streets of the town and get away from the tourists and still enjoy the walled town.
we stayed in a hotel just outside the walls of the town and only walked approx 100m to the gates of the town. it was ideal for us with a car.

I have been there a number of times and driven the road... and obviously it is not the road that is romantic, but the landscape and the little towns that you find along the way, the farms that you see off in the distance, the canola fields, etc.

My favorite town to stay in is Dinkelsbuhl... it is quaint, friendly and while I can't remember the names of places I have stayed there are any number of little B&Bs. It is easy to drive in and parking was not an issue at hotels. We drove to Rothenberg and parked, then walked in. I could have stayed there, but I really prefer staying in a town less touristy.

Thank you for the suggestion about staying on the island of Lindau at Lake Konstanz. Can anyone suggest a hotel there? I already have reservations in Konstanz at the Steigenberger Inselhotel, however, we are now being joined by another couple and there is not another room available at the Steigenberger

Although I've visited Lindau 6 times (as I remember), I've never spent the night there. There are a number of hotels right on the harbor. You can find them on Google Maps. They are not cheap. There are also some hotels back from the harbor for less. Also see Google Maps.

You can also use this town website to look for accommodations. This list is for hotels actually on the island, and it has about twice as many options as booking.com. If you click on details for any property it will take you to a webpage which probably has a link to the hotel's own website.
