We are doing the Rhine river cruise and end in Basel, Switzerland. My family originates from the town of Oberharmersbach in Germany which is only about an hour and a half away by car so we extended our stay in Basel two nights so that we can drive up to see what the town looks like. From there we want to take back roads back to Basel to get a good oversight of the Black Forest. I'm assuming stopping at all of the larger tourist stops is too much for a one day trip. What are the most recommended stops for traveling through when you only have about 1/2 of a day depending on how long we stay in Oberharmersbach?
Any tips would be appreciated. We've never been to Europe so this is all a first for us.
Thank you!
There are a couple of museums you may want to consider:
SCHWARZWALDMUSEUM (BLACK FOREST MUSEUM), Wallfahrtstr. 4, Triberg
SCHWARZWÄLDER FREILICHTMUSEUM VOGTSBAUERNHOF (BLACK FOREST OPEN-AIR MUSEUM), B–33 Vogtsbauernhof, Gutach
We stopped in Triberg for lunch and to buy a cuckoo clock. Touristy but I wanted one. :)
I also gathered a couple of "favorite Black Forest drives" I'd be happy to share with you if you send me your email address via PM. We didn't follow either of them strictly but they may give you some ideas. We were coming from the opposite direction from your starting point.
Thanks for your suggestions. I know it's hard with only one day and not knowing how long our stop in Oberharmersbach will be but I really want to see the Black Forest while we are there and I thought it would be nice to wander back roads on our way back to Basel instead of being on the autoban.
Nearby towns worth a look - Zell ( small museum in tower ), Gengenbach ( Narren museum if you are there Wed, weekend ), Shiltach ( beautiful half timber buildings, nice small modern town museum ). None of these takes very long, depending on how they appeal to you. Then I would drive to Triberg and then just 'get lost' for as long as you can spare, then continue to Basel
Thank you both!
