Stuttgart to Frankfurt

Fly out from Texas on Dec 25th to Stuttgart. Then fly home on Jan 3rd from Frankfurt. I've been all over Germany and have hit all the major site. I got a reduced airfare with miles for this short trip over the holiday break. I'm going solo as wife and kids did not want to do anything over the break.

What are some ideas or "MUST" see sites. I speak German and love Old City Centers, Castles, Palaces and Museums.

I've been to Frankfurt 5 times. Not to interested in visiting anything in Frankfurt. If my cousin and her family are in Frankfurt (not on vacation) I will come in Thursday afternoon so we can have dinner. Or maybe come in Friday morning to have breakfast as my flight on Friday is at 1 pm.

Danke,

Michael

Good that you know German, certainly helps to be sure and enhances what you are seeing.

If you're into German cultural history, I would suggest a more esoteric town near Stuttgart, ca. 12 miles or so....Marbach am Neckar, where the big Schiller Museum is located. His statue along that of Goethe is am Theaterplatz in Weimar which I have seen. (Also here in SF too).

Take the S-Bahn from the Hbf to get to Marbach. The town is worth your time.

Part 2 here:

Depending your time constraint, you could take the train to Karlsruhe, itself a very history city, the Schloss, etc plus within 15-20mins os, Karlsruhe puts you within distance of Rastatt, close to French border.

If your interests also include war and military museums pertaining to Prussian-German history, the one located in the Schloss in Rastatt would be of definite interest, all the more so since you have a reading knowledge of the language.

I've only since the museum once, in 1992, and then it was big with extensive detailed exhibitions and displays. I would assume that in 30 plus years refurbishing, updating the museum, etc , the museum would be even more extensive. From the Rastatt train station it's ca. 35-40 min. walk to reach the Schloss.

With Rastatt, Karlsruhe, and the Schiller town of Marbach, going to Stuttgart has its advantages. I went too my first time in Germany.

I suggest visiting Heidelberg, for sure. Also, you could head south to Strasbourg, France and the Black Forest area (Baden Baden, Triberg, Friberg).

If you haven't been to Luxembourg, consider going there.

Adding to @geovagriffith post, consider Trier if you head in the direction he suggests.

Just a reminder that 26 DEC is a German Holiday, as is the 31st. And also 1 JAN. Nothing will be open those days, and public transport will be limited. You might check and see if the Porsche or MBZ museums are open, they are private, so they be staffed. I'm a little biased, but I'd look at Wurzburg, Bamburg, and Bayreuth, or Bad Homburg, or going down the wine road towards Stuttgart via Heidelberg and Heilbronn. For smaller places look at Speyer or Neckargemund.
