"best German town near Swiss border to drop of my rental car.". Lörrach or Weil am Rhein. Both suburbs of Basel with good transport into the city centre so you can get a train from Basel SBB station.
Freiburg im Breisgau nice city, worth spending time there, regular trains to Basel.

Try "Sixt", it is a German company, and so has the best coverage.

Freiburg will offer direct high-speed trains into Switzerland.

I suggest that anyone choosing to rent a car in Germany should browse through the experiences of those who have gone before. It's not just like renting back home, so rent with your eyes wide open. Most problems seem to revolve around damage to vehicles - some real, some fake. You'll find dozens of experiences on each of these threads.

Let me chime in with my experiences... done it, no problems at all. Actually, I've had less problems renting in Europe than in the US. The only major caution I would give, so that you avoid unwanted "souvenir photos" of yourself driving the rental car (from speed cameras) is to understand the rules of the road regarding speed limits. Know not just the speed limits signs, but the rules for when the default rural and urban speed limits apply. And realize that unlike in North America where the police have the discretion to only pull over the fastest, most reckless drivers, speed cameras will flag everyone going over the limit.

I should also add that I have found Sixt to offer the most superior service of any rental agency, anywhere. They even sent a representative to a small Swedish airport to meet me late at night, long after their office had closed. The problems listed in the linked reports above seem to be related to not understanding the conditions of rental.

Sixt is my regular car rental company in Germany. Never any problems, lots of locations and easy to work with.

Most complaints I've heard were of people getting extra fees for traffic violation but that is the same with any rental company. Regarding damage claims just be sure to mark every small scratch or dent. I usually photograph any damage to a rental car with my phone just in case there is a disagreement (but I've never had to use the photos).

Agree that Sixt is excellent to deal with. I did once get a camera radar ticket on the autobahn (easy to do, as they are set up at many points where the speed limit drops) and it was sent on to me in the mail, with a note that I would not be allowed to rent again unless I paid it. So I paid it. The cameras and the different speed zones seem to multiply each year with increased traffic.
It is also illegal to overtake too slowly, as I once did in an anemic Fiat Panda, not from Sixt, which resulted in two racing BMWs in the outer lane testing their ABS systems and giving me the finger, then calling the autobahn polizei, which pulled me over with their tiny Toyots Corolla (?) and explained to me and my small son, who saved the day, that tourists in hospital were bad for business and I almost caused a multi-car accident and would I please never do that again? Lesson learned. Slow trucks in a two lane stretch are best kept pace with, or overtaken rapidly with full use of the rearview mirror. In a rental car with some power under the hood, hint, hint. A diesel model has far better torque and oomph for the job, by the way.

Why drive when you can take the train and view the scenery without risking an accident? There is a rail connection from Stuttgart via Eutingen im Gäu, Freudenstadt, Hausach, up the Gutach on the Schwarzwald Bahn to Triberg, then on to Donaueschingen. From Donaueschingen, you could go by way of Titisee to Basel or by way of Singen to Konstanz. Both are on the Swiss border. The entire trip will take 5 or 6 hours depending on the final destination (to Konstanz is faster). I've been on every km (although not all at once) of those routes between Stuttgart and Konstanz/Basel and parts are very scenic.

That entire trip can be done in one day with a Baden-Württemberg-Ticket (28€ for two people, 23€ for one).
