Stuttgart, Reutlingen, Schloss Liechtenstein

From Zinzinnati, greetings everyone! Online research leads me to the birthplace of my great grandfather...Reutlingen, Germany. Next month I am flying to Stuttgart and traveling directly to Reutlingen for five days. I will be attending the Reutlingen Staadtfest for 2 days and would like to visit Schloss Liechtenstein. I have the usual transportation questions... Best way from Stuttgart airport to Reutlingen hotel? Best way from Reutlingen to Schloss Liechtenstein? I will still have a couple days free to explore Reutlingen on foot. I want to visit the local cemetary with my records. Of the few local cemetaries, which one is pre 1850? Does anyone have recommendations for Reutlingen? Food and drink? Any local favorites I should try? Any information would appreciated.

The fastest way would be a 45 minute bus ride from the airport. Goes at 35 past the hour, 3 minutes later on Sundays. At other times there are train connections taking a bit longer.
To get to Schloss Lichtenstein (note spelling), it is probably best to rent a car for the day.

Schloss Lichtenstein is a beautiful spot with a great vantage point. I have been going there since I was a teen in the 80's when visiting family near Ulm. If you get over to Ulm be sure to climb the 700 steps to the top of the Ulmer Münster - the tallest church spire bin the world. I'm pretty sure there are regional buses also running around the Schwäbische Alb.

Hi Neighbor! (From C-bus) Here are things I would do before you leave. A lot of the Germany cities/towns have an info email address on their website. I would email them asking about the cemetaries. We did a genealogical trip last December (The Stuttgart area). My dad wanted to go to the cemetaries and find graves. The problem that we ran into it seems that they have a rental system on the burial plots in Germany. So once the money runs out, they bury someone else there. So you may have some luck (if there was money, my relatives were not so lucky). I would also check the churches in the area. They may have the records as well. We also had some luck connecting with the archiveists/historians in the towns we went to. But do this before leaving and make an appointment. The one place we popped in, things go lost in translation and there was a lot of confusion and we were not able to find the records we were looking for.

In terms of food. I am a huge fan of spätzle. I could eat my weight in it. Next time we go I want to try Maultaschen.

Have fun!!!

Sam, RickS, and Susan...
Thank you all so much for the information you provided. I have made some changes based on it. I've changed the first two days of my trip to a stay in Stuttgart. A trip to Schloss Lichtenstein, historic Ulm, and the Swabian Alps will be done by road next year. I have the bus schedule for airport>Stuttgart>Reutlingen>airport. Hopefully the cemetery hasn't relocated my great x7 grandfather, Esajas Reiff, who was the mayor in the 1600's. I have found a Reutlingen tourism website and have emailed about a archivist or historian.
