Our christmas itinerary is 90% done..
One question is.. We arrive Stuttgart at 2PM.. planning to take local train to Esslingen that day..
And arrive back at Stuttgart later that night for hotel check in..
WE are leaving for Strasbourg next day.. we have 2 time options.. 11AM and 3pm.. both are direct train that last 1hr20min..
Should we stay longer in Stuttgart and enjoy the Christmas market there in the afternoon?? or should we head out to Strasbourg at 11AM??
Is going to Esslingen on the day of Stuttgart arrival advisable or should we do we do it the next day, before heading out to Strasbourg..
We plan to spend 2 nights in Strasbourg...

In general Christmas markets feel more cozy in the late afternoon and early evening when it is getting dark.

I really like the Stuttgart Market.
Check into your hotel, go to Esslingen, walk around a couple of hours, then come back and walk around Stuttgart for a while.
Take the 11:00 train the next day. If you wait until 1500, it will be dark by the time you get to Strasbourg. It is good to get to a new city when it is light out, to see your way around a bit.

For the most part I agree with Ms Jo. But...If you have any interest in Porsche or MBZ you should take the time to visit one of those museums. Even if it makes you a little late getting to Strasbourg.
