Strasbourg and Munich

Itinerary help - 3 nights in Strasbourg or 3 nights in Munich? We’re going to both and trying to figure out which we should stay in longer. Whatever one we don’t say 3 nights in, we will stay in for 2. We are starting in Paris before Strasbourg and going to Salzburg after Munich. Thanks!!! Trip is this August.

ETA: We will not have car (trains only) and two kids 7 and 9! TY!!

I don’t think it makes much difference. If I had to choose, I’d choose Strasbourg

Munich over Strasbourg. You can spend weeks in Munich and never see it all. 3 days in Strasbourg is more than enough. Day trips would add to either, but there' s a lot more within an hour of Munich than there is within the Alsace around Strasbourg. Garmisch, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Amburg, Chiemsee, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Ansbach, Ingolstadt, Starnberg, Augsburg, Ulm, countless small towns, etc.

I am in the Strasbourg camp, mainly because I have an addiction to Soufflenheim pottery (A village north of Strasbourg) There is also Colmar near by which we enjoyed as well.

I think it would depend on a few things.

How much actual time would you be in each location based on your mode of transportation and schedules.

What do you hope to do and see in each location?

I guess for me it would depend on transportation. If you're driving or willing to rent a car for a day I might say Strasbourg, one day for the city, a day trip to Colmar, and a day drive to the wine villages nearby. If doing strictly trains I would probably say Munich, 2 days for the city and a day trip to one of the towns listed in the other post. So many options. I loved my day trip to Regensburg.

Thanks to all who replied! If it helps, we will be traveling by train only and have two kids with us (7 and 9)

I've never been to Munich but for me Strasbourg is well worth it, also day trips that include Koenigsbourg Castle https://www.haut-koenigsbourg.fr/en/ and some of the fairytale villages in the Alsace. Kids that age may love it.

Again, what do you want to see and do in these places? That will help you decide how much time your family needs.

"Only Paris and Salzburg are MUSTs!"

(From a prior post of yours)

So I guess an extra day in Munich for Salzburg, right?

Honestly, if I had kids and a family vacation in mind... It's only 2 train hours to Strasbourg from Paris... you could see a lot there on arrival day. With 5 nights, I might favor ...

  • Just 1 night in Strasbourg (+ morning sightseeing on Day 2.)

  • pm train on Day 2 to Günzburg (for Legoland Deutschland, which is a stop on the way to Munich) for 1 night.

  • Day 3&4: late afternoon train to Munich, change trains for Salzburg. 2-night stay in Salzburg.

  • Day 5: to Munich, final night there.
