Stralsund or Wismar or...???

My friend and I and 4 teen boys (gulp!) are visiting Europe this summer - we are likely spending a few nights in Rostock in Northern Germany, got some good advice here already.

Looks like we will have one day to take a day trip... we would like to visit a cute little European town I think - some favorites have been Lucca, York... places like this.

In researching, we want to go by train around an hour... looks like Stralsund or Wismar may fit the bill.. any opinions on which is better?

Seems we may also be able to do Schwerin in combo if we pick Wismar? Not sure if that is too much for a day... it can be a full day since we are chilling at the beach the day before, and spending the day on the train the day after!

Thoughts? Or maybe Lubeck though it is a little farther???

Thanks!!!

I liked the atmosphere in former Eastern Germany during my trip in 2010. My pick: Wismar in combination with Swerin and halfway think as I didn’t visited it Schloss Wiligrad looks nice for a stop or a visit. There are more castles in the area to think about: https://www.mv-schloesser.de/de/startseite/ (english version seems not to function so well).

Given those two exact choices, I pick Stralsund. The teen boys might be interested in the Marinemuseum., which focuses on German naval history.
