We are driving from Hirtshals Denmark and Passau Germany to catch a barge on the Danube River. I planned to stay in Wurzburg (in between), but it's a 9 1/2 hour drive! I would like suggestions on a town between that is more or less halfway. Total drive time is about 13 hours. Thanks!
Hanover Germany looks about half way between the two cities. 6.5 hours. I have not been there, but it is on my list of places to go. The photos I am seeing online look amazing. (yes it was on my list before looking at the pictures) I think you might get some more answers if you post what you are looking for. Are you just wanting a stopping place? Or are you looking for a place to explore? Any additional information you can provide will be helpful.
Wow, that is quite a long drive!
One of the towns in the Harz region, such as Goslar, Quedlinburg or Wernigerode would make a good stop, although a one night stop-over won't do the area justice.
You could also consider Erfurt, Leipzig or Magdeburg. Hanover has some attractive remnants of it's history, but most of the town is a relatively unattractive modern rebuild after the damage inflicted by WWII.
Near Hanover is one of my favorite small towns in Germany > Goslar. We enjoyed staying in Goslar a few times when traveling south for work and vacation. That was in the 1980's but I see that it is still highly rated in travel guides. Gary
As others already said, the towns of the Harz mountains make a good stop. Instead of Goslar I would recommend Quedlinburg however. Both World Heritage Sites, but Goslar is a bit overrestored compared to Quedlinburg, which feels more authentic.

Thanks for the input everyone! There are so many great places to see - in such a short time. We will have more time to explore after the bike-barge trip,
