Stockholm to Warnemunde or Kiel

We will end a Baltic Cruise in Stockholm in mid-June 2016. As we visited Stockholm last year, we’d like to take a ferry from Stockholm to northern Germany, perhaps ending in Warnemünde or Kiel. We want to rent a car and drive to Rugen on the east and Lübeck, Wismar, Schwern and Schleswig on the west. If we arrive in Kiel, we’ll drive west to east, if arriving in Warnemünde, then we'll drive east to west, probably returning the car at Hamburg Hbf. We’d prefer a Stockholm to Warnemünde ferry and drive east to west (less backtracking). Is there a SIxt car rental in Warnemünde, if not we could take the S-Bahn to Rostock. We’d arrive in either Warnemünde or Kiel on the morning of June 20, a Monday.

The distances in Scandinavia are somewhat deceiving. From Stockholm to just Copenhagen is about 865 miles by water, and Copenhagen is still quite a ways north of Warnemunde/Rostock.
The airports in the Rostock area are small and flights don't go north. You might consider flying from Stockholm to Hamburg and renting a car there. The area you're wanting to travel in is a relatively short distance east of there.

We just returned from a Baltic cruise and found Warnemunde to be a lovely port city.

Hi,

The ferry connection to Kiel from Scandanavia is that from Oslo, ie, Oslo to Kiel. You could either fly from Stockholm to Oslo or go by train depending on the time factor, then catch the ferry.

Thanks for politely reminding me to check the scale on the map.

Looks like we're either going to fly back to the US out of Stockholm, or fly from Stockholm to Hamburg and rent a car. Is there anything to be said for taking a train from Stockholm to, say, Malmo, and the ferry across to Warnemünde? If the train trip is one of watching coniferous trees wiz by, this doesn’t sound particularly appealing; also, I wouldn’t be surprised if we could fly at less cost than the train. Maybe we'll change the direction of the cruise and start in Stockholm.

Any particular reason for choosing a ferry? As already mentioned, the distances are big and there is no ferry from Stockholm to Warnemünde.
You can take the train from Stockholm to Copenhagen and from there another train to Hamburg. Another option could be one of the many ferries from Trelleborg. Google maps have ferry connections on the map itself, so that should give you a better overview.
As you suspect, the train between Stockholm and Malmø is pretty much just a lot of forrest.
Another option is to fly from Stockholm to either Copenhagen or Hamburg, SAS and Norwegian are the main carriers between Stockholm and Copenhagen.

Thanks for the thoughtful suggestions. I've found a way to solve the Stockholm-to-northern-Germany matter. We'll book a different cruise that doesn't start or end in Stockholm. Thanks again.
