Staying in Munich during Oktoberfest

Hello all,

We are planning on traveling to Munich 18-21 Sept, which is right when Oktoberfest happens. We are planning to stay somewhere away from the city center, since the available accommodations right now are very expensive. Does anyone have any good places close to Munich they recommend? I was thinking of Dachau since we are planning to go to the concentration camp memorial. We also have a rental car, so we can always drive to the city. We are flying out on the 22nd, so somewhere further north/closer to Munich airport would be better.

There are rooms left in Augsburg and Landshut, about 50-60 minutes to Munich (München) by train. I would not want to drive into München and look for a parking spot at this time. Both of these are beautiful towns worth a visit on their own merit.

Rooms check:

From: "Landshut" for example
To München Hbf (main train station).

I agree with finding accommodations in Augsburg, cheaper too. You should forget about driving in Munich.

Hi Pearl,
I was there last year and I was having trouble finding a hotel.
Ended up with 2 nights at the Park Inn by Radisson Munich Ost Munsenbergstrasse 25 and 2 nights at the Park Inn by Radisson on Frankfurter Ring 20. It was hard to find rooms near the city center.
Both hotels were only a few minutes from the metro/subway station. I think, we would get to the center of town within 20-25 minutes. Might have even been less.
Both hotels were nice and quiet. We had a family metro pass that was very affordable for the 4 days that we were there.
Hope this helps,
Have a wonderful time!

With a car we have happily stayed at the Bauer in Feldkirchen, just a quick bus or short walk from the S-Bahn into the centre.

They seem to have a few rooms for the period.

Call them and they may be able to get you all the way through.

There are lots of threads discussing nearby alternatives like Augsburg, Landshut, Rosenheim, Tegernsee, Landsberg am Lech, etc.

I'm partial to the Tegernsee area. My brother and I lead a trip to Oktoberfest trip every other year and we spend the first few nights in Tegernsee before heading into the city for the second half of the trip. The lake has several small villages surrounding it which are joined by bus (free if you are staying in the area), a foot/cycle path or ferries. It is close enough to Munich using the BOB train (they have a combo BOB-MVV ticket) that you can go into the city have some fun and come back the same day if needed, also public transportation around the lake is usually included with your hotel. Since it is a touristy area there is a lot of good infrastructure for visitors. There is a great Brewery/Restaurant right on the lake, Bräustüberl Tegernsee. It also beats any areas north of the city in terms of scenery. Last of all room in Bad Wiessee are cheap compared to Munich, last year I've booked a triple room for 99€/night for the first weekend of Oktoberfest.

Thanks, everyone! I'm thinking either Augsburg or Feldkirchen since they seem to be close to the airport but also not far from city center.

Haha yes, it's about an hour train ride away, but it is one of the closer ones out of the other choices and it looks interesting to tour, so I don't mind.

Whenever I am flying out of Munich airport I stay in the small town of Erding. It is nearby the airport. My first choice there is always the Best western Park Hotel. It is directly across the street from where the S-Bahn from Munich drops you off. There rooms are quite nice and the price is NORMALLY reasonable. I have never tried to stay there during Oktoberfest. There are many hotels in this town that you may want to check out.

Thanks, Jack! I tried looking up Erding hotels, such as the Best Western you recommended, but their prices are increased during Oktoberfest, so it's no longer a "budget" option for me, unfortunately. I ended up booking a chain hotel at Feldkirchen that got good reviews on TripAdvisor and wasn't as expensive as the others. The town is not too far from Munich and only 30min away from the airport, so it's the best option for me.

Again, thank you everyone for your input! :)
