St Goar things to do

We are stopping in St Goar for 2 nights on our way to our RS GAS tour. 9/22-9/24
We have 1 full day in St Goar. Any recommendations on how to plan our day. We are staying at Hotel Rheinfels.

Burg Rheinfels is the big ruined castle above St. Goar.

Nearby Boppard has a chairlift that leads to a place where the Rhine makes a big bend and appears as 4 lakes. The ride back down has great views. I will be spending a week in the area (previously spent 12 days in last two trips) and this is only 1 of 2 things I plan on repeating.

Oberwesel and Bacharach are two other good places to visit that are just a short train ride away.

Town wall walk in Oberwesel (5 minutes south of St. Goar by train)

Rhine Cruise (train to Bingen, cruise 1.5 hrs. to St. Goar; you could do this on Day 1... FRA airport > Bingen > cruise to St. Goar.) This segment of the river is filled with castles, vine-clad cliffs, and attractive towns - the best part for a cruise.

Next door to Rheinfels castle you might want to have lunch on the Landgraf Terrace (in the hotel there.)

Boppard (10 minutes north of St. Goar by train) is a nice town - do the chairlift ride there, as stephen suggests, and get some refreshments at Gedeonseck terrace, a short walk from there.

Thank you for these great suggestions. It sounds like it’s easy to navigate

I really like the suggestion of taking the train from Frankfurt to Bingen then taking KD cruise to St Goar. Normally we travel with friends but this time we are on our own and a little nervous having to organize ourselves. Looking at a map it looks like Bingen Stadt is closer to the KD Line then Bingen HBF.

Can we take the Bingen Stadt from Frankfurt airport to Bingen

You have it right. Train from Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Regionalbahnhof station to the Bingen Rhein Stadt station. Try to have at least 20 minutes between arrival in Bingen and cruise departure. Also, for more convenience, try to catch one of the DIRECT regional trains to Bingen - on most days there's a 9:23 departure arriving 10:09 in Bingen, just in time for the 10:30 cruise north. Most other departures will include a change of train in Mainz or elsewhere (not a huge problem, just inconvenient.)

The RMV fare for this trip is €8.60 each from a ticket machine at the FRA station. RMV is the local transit authority (DB only sells tickets for the high-speed trains from FRA's Fernbahnhof station for FRA - Bingen.)

Ticket machines look like these. Any machine with the RMV logo will do. Have both Euro cash and coins handy - they can be fussy about cards and pins, and a little bit fussy about what bills they will take. St. Goar and the other Rhine towns are mostly-cash sorts of places where credit cards can be used for hotel bills, but restaurants and cafes often want cash only - so loading up on pocket cash before leaving FRA isn't a bad idea.
