Speyer vs Heidelberg

Hi, on our Rhine cruise we have the option of seeing Speyer or Heidelberg. Anyone have any preferences. My husband had hip surgery a year ago so thinking Heidelberg might be harder with more stairs? But is is worth it? Thanks so much for your thoughts!

Hi Kathy,

What time of year and how much time do you have for your selected location? Are you free to explore or is this an organized tour? Is this a choice of a cruise stop or an excursion?

Some general opinions:

Heidelberg is commonly crowded, is larger, and will likely require more walking. Stairs are present, but there is a funicular to the castle. The views and photo ops are terrific. The old town is charming, lively, and caters to tourists. There is a lot of history here.

Speyer is altogether different. Depending on your timing, it's possible that the only other tourists will be your fellow cruisers. The impressive Unesco cathedral is very accessible and has not once been crowded on the many occasions that I have visited. There is also a lot of history here, emperors and kings. The old town is lovely, very walkable and flat with great restaurants. The size of the place is quite manageable.

In short, both are good options, but Speyer is one of my favorite ways to spend a relaxed afternoon in the region.

I really like Heidelberg, but with hip surgery and possible mobility difficulties, I would choose Speyer.
First of all, your ship may be docked here so no long bus ride. 2nd, the town is charming, you can pick from the cathedral, to interesting Jewish history since Speyer is one of the SCHUM cities, or the old town area.

These are very different cities. Heidelberg Is much larger (the area tourists stay in), and while it's built along the river the valley is close and steep, which is why the castle was built there. (So they could control traffic on the river.) But if you stay in the main shopping area around old town it's mostly flat and linier. If you want to go to the castle then you'll have to climb the hill, take the train, or a cab. There's a lot to see and do in the shopping area, a couple museums, galleries, the University and cathedral, and shop ranging from the very high end to back street places. You also have easy access to the busses and street cars and can easily move around the rest of the city and see stuff like the zoo. Or even take a 15 minute ride down to Mannheim and explore there.

Speyer is much flatter, the area being further out into the Rhine plain, although you would have a slight uphill slope from where the boats dock. Right on the river there's a series of beer gardens/restaurants which fill up when the boats are in town. But the cathedral in Speyer is a very short walk from the docks, maybe 10 minutes, through mostly park, and the old part of town spreads out from there in rings. It's very walkable, and you can easily see the local history museum, the small museum of Celtic History, or just have a good meal and walk the main drag up to the gate tower. But the best thing in Speyer is the Technical Museum, and that too is very close to the docks. If you have any interest in old cars, boats, submarines, aircraft, space exploration, old carnival music shows, trains, etc. this is where I'd spend my time (and I do, once or twice a year. )

For me Heidelberg is where i go to have a meal, shop for used books and whatever, and basically spend a day out of the house. It has a really good Christmas market if you're there between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Speyer is a place I go to get out of the house and have a day in the museums and just walking the town. Heidelberg is always more crowded, and expensive.

And, since I mentioned taking the train from Heidelberg you should know that option exists for both although the train station in Speyer is much further away from the boat docks. Heidelberg has quick and easy access to Mannheim, Ludwigshafen, and Neckargemund. From Speyer, going west, you have all of the vineyards, all the way up to the Pfalz escarpment, and towns like Bad Durkheim or Neustadt on the Weinstrasse. But, if you only have 4-8 hours, I'd go to Speyer.

You need to get more information on what the excursion is providing. Bus, van, walking. How much time doing what. Is there an activity level stated?
