A closed thread reminded me I should ask this question: will you find that large stores will ship things home directly for you? I understand there may be a fee involved, of course. Thanks!
What are you talking about? A store that sells stuff primarily to tourists, some kind of department store or another type of shop?
We bought a cuckoo clock in Rothenburg and had it shipped. They took off the VAT tax and charged 30 Euros or so to ship it so it was worth it.
I plan to purchase a cuckoo clock in Germany and have it shipped home to the States. From what I understand, if the store ships directly they will eliminate the VAT tax so on bigger items you will likely break even or maybe come out ahead. ....really for the convenience of not having to worry about putting your items in your luggage, I think it's worth it!
It's not really a question of the size of the store, more one of the type. Tourist stores are used to shipping goods as are arts stores/galleries. It may cost you quite a bit but in some cases I do appreciate that service because they are also experienced in how to properly pack to avoid damage during shipping.
