Southern Germany planning advice please

We have about a week to spend in southern Germany next June. We will be driving from Paris, and leaving Germany for Provence by the end of the week.

We are fond of the area between Freiburg and Heidelberg. We really want to see Rothenburg odT, and a good bit of the Romantic Road, Dinkelsbuhl and probably down toward Augsberg.

Assuming 6 nights to do this, before we leave the country, heading south to France.

We aren't really interested in any of the cities. Smaller towns appeal more.

Limitations:

-We are a family of four, so we will be driving. No trains, no extra flights.

-We really want to have a base (or a couple of bases), where we can settle in and then fan out from that location. One night stays are out.

We're thinking maybe 2 nights in a spot in Baden-Wurttemberg and 4 nights in a single accommodation further west, probably one side or other of the boundary with Bavaria. That will mean more miles overall to do the back-and-forth for day trips, but the comfort of having a spot and not needing to pack and unpack every day is absolutely worth it to us.

What areas or towns would work for a base or bases?

Thanks for your insight.

We lived in Augsburg, Germany, about 50 miles west of Munich, for four years (87-91). Loved the city, consider visiting it. It is on the Romantic Road.

The Romantic Road is great, lots of small towns or cities.https://www.romanticroadgermany.com
It's not too hard to see the reason for the popularity - despite the modern roots of the idea, the tour combines the historic cities of Würzburg and Augsburg with the three medieval walled towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen, and then finishes off with the tourist highlights of Neuschwanstein Castle and the Alps.

These days coach parties from all over the world can be seen at the most popular stops along the way, the route signs along the way are in German and Japanese, and in 2010 the Romantic Road celebrated its 60th birthday.

This site is designed for those who would rather explore all or some of the Romantic Road on their own, rather than in a coach party. It is written from an independent viewpoint and is not the official marketing website for the Romantic Road. All of the larger and more popular sights are here (see the navigation off to the right) but also some of the smaller towns and villages that sometimes get lost in the marketing shuffle and the stressful rush from one "ticked" historic sight to another.

Part of the charm of this region is the discovery of walking trails through the vineyards in the Tauber valley or the traditional villages and churches of the Pfaffenwinkel. If there is anything extra you would like to see on this site or any comments you might have - and especially if you would like to give your own feedback once you have travelled all or part of the Romantic Road - please feel free to contact us.

If you have travelled the Romantic Road and are looking for another tourist route in Germany, the German Alpine Road pages on our sister site GermanSights.com may be of interest.

I recommend visiting Wurzburg then Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen. Also, Donauworth is another small town worth a visit.

Heidelberg is nice. Stuttgart is a large city with a lot of heavy traffic, but if you like cars, you can visit the Mercedes-Benz or Porsche factory there.

In the Black Forest, Baden Baden, Titisee, Friberg and Triberg are all good. Of course, you could spend two nights in Rothenberg and then use Friberg, Triberg or Titisee in the Black Forest to base.

geovagriffith, while I generally agree with your points I'm finding it hard to tell in this answer just above which are your words and which are quoted from somewhere else.

I've seen you post lots of excellent stuff over the years yet I never knew that you have a website and a sister website about Germany.

Are you actually a tour guide? Or have you been hacked?
