Southern Germany 9-16 June

Hello.

We will travel to southern Germany in June, arriving by airplane on 9 June and departing on 16 June (6 full days). We are flying in from London and have some flexibility where we fly into and back out from.

We will likely spend at least a few days in Munich, see the city, and do a day trip or two. We especially want to take the train to Herrsching and hike up to the Monastery. We'd also like to see some castles and do some hiking and biking.

We like to be active (hiking, biking, walking), but not rushed. Ideally, train rides of no more than about an hour each way would be our goal. We also don't like to move from hotel to hotel very often, maybe one hotel change during our time in Germany would be enough for us. A good mix of city, history, and nature is our ideal holiday.

Does anyone have some suggestions for an itinerary? Maybe fly into Salzburg and out of Munich? Or base in Munich? Suggestions for things to see and do? Drive versus train? Also, if anyone knows of a decent SPG property in Munich that is in a safe location and close to smaller restaurants, we'd be very interested. I've looked at the properties on the SPG website and can't figure out which is in the best location for access to trains (for day trips) and seeing the city.

Thank you in advance!

I'm surprised you didn't get any response. Maybe because you posted basically in the middle of the night, according to my time stamp anyway. I don't have any recommendations, we'll be in Germany in the same time period but in different areas since we were in Munich on a previous trip. Hopefully this will bump you and you'll get some help.

Public transportation in Southern Germany and Bavaria in particular is great. You should be able to get to anywhere most people go by train, or, in a pinch, buses. I would say base the whole time in Munich, but there are places around Salzburg (Berchtesgaden) worth seeing, I think you could base there to and fly into one and out of the other.

If you stayed in Salzburg for a few days, there is a bus from the Salzburg Hbf (stops other places in town on the way to Berchtesgaden) to the Berchtesgaden Hbf. The bus costs 10 euro RT (an all day pass, actually), and the pass gives you free access to most of the buses in Berchtesgaden.

Most of the time there are buses that meet the train in Herrsching and will take you to Andechs. No need to hike, unless you want to.

Unless you have some sort of a deal with Starwood that makes accommodations really economical, I would say that there are better places in Munich (this is one) to stay in. It's very close to the center of town, Marienplatz, and very economical.

Thanks for the replies.
@Celeste - We are expats living in India, so posting in the middle of the night is actually the middle of the day for us. :) But thanks for bumping it up.

@Lee - Thanks for the information. We decided to base in Munich and do everything from there. There is only one longer day and that is the trip to Salzburg, otherwise everything else is manageable. One long day with an early departure isn't such a big deal since we are not driving.

Thanks again!

"We'd also like to see some castles and do some hiking and biking."

You already mentioned the Andechs hike. So do you mean additional hiking somewhere else? Where are you planning to do this other stuff?

"A good mix of city, history, and nature is our ideal holiday."

Munich = CITY, Salzburg = city. Nature? What did you have in mind? If the German Alps, I'm thinking you'll have another day trip from Munich that's longer than the one to Salzburg.

I suspect that Lee suggested staying in Salzburg and the day trip to Berchtesgaden for this reason. I might suggest staying in Berchtesgaden, with a day trip to Salzburg, if you're sincere about nature and hiking. Staying 6 nights in Munich does not seem like much of a "mix."
