Solo Female Traveler in Munich

Hi everyone!

I'm a solo female traveler staying in Munich from 5/27-5/30. Im planning on visiting Dachau for 1 day and staying locally in munich for the rest of the time. I'm looking for hostel recommendations that won't break the bank (~$35/night typically) and are in a relatively safe area. I am a graduate student so I wouldn't mind a hostel that offered some night activities but I am also ok with a hostel that offers a more chill environment. I could really use the help in either specific hostels or just general neighborhoods that would be good for a 23 year old solo female traveler.

We stayed in Hostel 4You in Munich in 2017. It was quite reasonable, has private rooms and a shared bunkhouse, has a lot of young people, a very nice breakfast, 1 coupon per day for beer or coffee, and is 1.5 blocks from the HbH. We thought it was just fine. Since it is close to the HbH, all transport (S-bahn, trams, buses) are easy to get to. You can make an internet reservation with them.

Germany in general and Munich in particular are very safe. Most of the hostels are located near the train station, which is considered "seedy" for Germany, but it's still safe. I stayed in a decent hostel in that area - unfortunately I don't remember the name, but they're all pretty similar from what I understand - and it worked out great.

Another, even cheaper option is "The Tent." It's a large hostel/campground out towards Nymphenberg Schloss.

The upsides:
-Very cheap
-Cafe/bar and campfire area is great for making new friends, lots of young travelers

The downsides:
-Accommodation is in a bunkbed in a giant "circus tent". People are coming and going at all hours and using the creaky metal lockers so earplugs or being a deep sleeper is a good idea.
-Location is around 20 minutes from the center of town via tram and a 10 minute walk, although it's a nice, quiet neighborhood that probably "feels safer" than the area of cheap hostels near the train station

I would have loved it at your age, unfortunately I went when I was already in my mid-30s and was already used to more comfortable accommodation so it wasn't great for me. But if you want a more intentional travelers community and cheap prices, it's hard to beat!

Hi,

This private independent hostel is a small chain since they are also located in London, Budapest, Berlin, Vienna (3), and Munich.

I've stayed at the one in Munich and more often at one of the three in Vienna. This is the Wombats hostel, ca 3-4 mins from the main train station, Munich Hbf. It's located on Senefelderstraße. On that block, the same side of the block, are two more hostels, one if I recall correctly is adjacent to Wombats. You have a choice of three hostels all on the same block. The area is fine. Lots of people your age group and older stay at Wombats of various nationalities. I stay in the Munich Hbf area in a Pension.

I don't recommend the HI hostel in Munich, as you are likely to run into school groups. They don't stay at places like Wombats
