So. germany

We are planning a 24 day retirement trip in the fall of 2016. Besides the Netherlands, Belgium, and Normandy we will be driving into Germany from the Bastogne region. Originally we had plans to spend 3 nights in the Mosel area and then drive south and spend 4 nights in the Black Forest region (where my wife's family is from). In 2006 we visited Bavaria and northern Austria (Halstatt/Vienna).We also spend 2 days in Bachrach/St. Goar and did the Rhine cruise, etc... It seems to me that the Mosel area would be a bit redundant.

We are looking for another region of Germany to visit (in lieu of the Mosel), that is "driveable" from the Black Forest. We have no interest in large cities. Are there places to stay and visit south or a bit southeast of the Balck Forest? We will be finishing our trip in the Alsace region and using Colmar as a base for day trips.

We would have originally rented the car in Lille, France and will be returning the car in either Colmar or Strassbourg and then taking the train to Frankfurt airport to fly home. Returning the car in the same country where rented saves a huge surcharge.

Thanks for your help

Have you thought about Tubingen, Ulm, or the beautiful town of Bad Urach? We have been to all three and have thoroughly enjoyed our visits.

Lake constance is a great area that is popular with mostly europeans. I have based in lindau and meersburg. Historical, lots of sights, very german architecture a delightful scenic area.

Lake Of Constance (Bodensee) is probably my favorite place in Germany. It is stunningly beautiful. The lake is surrounded by the mountains of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. I have stayed in Meersburg a number of times.

If you go there, be sure to get up early and walk down to the water to watch the sunrise... you will most likely have the whole place to yourself.

Good 'ol Google Maps claims that it is less than a 2 hour drive from Freiburg to Konstanz (on the Bodensee) so depending on where you are going to start from in the Black Forest area I would call that 'drive-able' - so I'm going to add another vote for the Bodensee area.

Last year we visited Konstanz (Mainau is fantastic), took the ferry across to Meersburg, then meandered along the coast to visit Friedrichshafen and Lindau. Absolutely stunning visuals and there is certainly enough to keep one interested for several days at those locations.
