Snow chaos in Southern Bavaria

Due to the uninterrupted snowfall for the last three days, train services to and from Munich have been suspended today, cf. https://int.bahn.de/en/contact/special-event. Tickets booked for today remain valid until December 9.

Air travel is also affected:
"Due to the continuing heavy snowfall, there will be no air traffic probably until 6 a.m. tomorrow, December 3. Passengers are strongly advised not to travel to the airport today and to check the status of their flight with their airline before traveling to the airport tomorrow.", cf. https://www.munich-airport.com/

(And I'm trying to dig out my car now).

...and I told someone from australia before there will be not so much snow anymore due to Global Warming.
Global Myth?

I would use the word "chaos" more selectively.
It was just a stop of rail and flight operations due to heavy snowfall.
No reason to drama - especially not in winter in Bavaria.

Sitting with a cup of coffee and watching it snow some more this morning and 3sat Alpenpanorama. Looking forward to a First Advent Goose Mittagessen. Not that bad here, but more in the higher elevations. Many are cross country skiing (Langlaufen). Snowblower is still sitting in the garage. 15+ years ago we had more snow in the Oberpfalz in mid October.

The renowned newspaper "Die Zeit" is using " chaos", too. And I think the papers are deliberately talking about "chaos" as opposed to "catastrophe", which would actually be an exaggeration. According to its original classical greek und and to its present common usage, chaos is a state of disorder and confusion, but one which hopefully strives towards a state expressed by its Greek antonym "cosmos", i.e. a state of order. This is exactly what we have experienced here (just north of Landsberg am Lech) in the last two days: A chaos, especially in traffic, but not a catastrophe.

Well, today the sun is shining and we are slowly heading back to "cosmos". However, Munich Airport can only handle just under a third of its flights today and rail services to and from Munich are even suspended until Monday evening.

Today is a sunny and cold day in Munich in a stunning winter wonderland.
The airport is open again. But trains and trams in and around Munich are not operating while U-Bahn and busses are running.

Someone who knows the roots of the word chaos would not use it in my opinion. And "Die Zeit" is since years no longer what it was decades ago; they also go down the drain for clicks, views and the whole cheap commercial stuff.

There was no chaos. The order was fully upright and decided based on condition not to operate. That's it. No chaos at all.

Using a dramatic wording seems to tell more about the author than about the situation.

This is what I found when I goggled the definition. It literally referred to snow in the example.

The chaos is coming due to the trains being delayed or canceled and all of that backing up. It is a domino effect. Same thing with the flights. It may be ok to fly out of Frankfurt or Berlin or Milan, or Porto, but now your plane is not there cause it was stuck in Munich.
So, yes, this is chaos for anyone trying to travel and get to their destination in a timely manner.

there will be not so much snow anymore due to Global Warming

Believing that is a common mistake. Due to global warming, there might not be as many days cold enough to have snow, but there have always been plenty of those day. And, the days that were 'too cold to snow much' are now warmer. Global warming means the oceans are warmer and there is more evaporation into the air, so there is going to be more precipitation. When it is cold enough to snow, the snowfalls are likely to be heavier than they used to be.

This is an update from a friend who lives in Munich:

Update regarding public transport in Bavaria:
Deutsche Bahn is running trains again but they are not all in the intended locations yet; travelers are requested to postpone their trips, if possible, until Tuesday.
S-Bahn service around Munich remains disrupted except for S8 Westkreuz to Munich Airport.
U-Bahn is running except for U6 which is terminating at Alte Heide. EDIT: This may change by Monday morning, 4 Dec 2023.
Some schools in areas south of Munich are closed on Monday, either with remote learning or as a snow day.
Munich airport is operating again, some flights have been canceled as the planes are still elsewhere.
MVV buses in Munich are all running.
EDIT: Streetcars are not running as the tracks are still packed full of snow. It took them three days in March 2006 to deal with a similar amount of snowfall.

I still say this is a chaotic nightmare for those who are traveling, who may not understand announcements made in German and who just want to get to their destination.

I hate to do this but it infuriates me when someone sees a massive snowstorm and uses this to then dismiss Global Warming as a “Global Myth”. The massive intensity of our storms is due to global warming and ocean warming. If this overload of moisture has to condense out of cold air it will be snow not rain. But still an absolute consequence of our over-heated planet.

Whatever the newspapers wrote.....

This photo I took yesterday says everything about Munich and its residents :-) It shows that we make the best of every situation. And it shows that something like chaos is absolutely the wrong name for a proper winter in Munich. By the way, one I know from my childhood.

A happy Eisbach surfer in the Hofgarten - nothing is more Munich than that : https://www.flickr.com/photos/calabrones/53377038680/in/dateposted-public/

MUC update (12/05/23):

"The plan is to allow air traffic to resume from midday. However, it can be assumed that the majority of flights will also have to be canceled during the rest of the day for safety reasons.
Please contact your airline before traveling to the airport to find out the status of your flight."

Yes, the trains are messed up. I'm in Nuremberg. We should have left yesterday but train was canceled so we decided to extend a day based on dbahn recommendations. We rebooked seats on a train leaving midday today. I got up, checked DBAHN (a habit I've quickly developed) and got the "the trip is not possible" message. Ok, trying to figure out alternatives and all the trains are crazy full, canceled or not bookable. Contemplating staying yet another day so we decided to take a slow morning and repack our luggage that's gotten kind of jumbled.

Then, 20 minutes ago I got a notification that there's been a platform change for my previously canceled journey that is no longer showing as stops canceled.

But did I get a notification earlier that the trip was now back on? No, I did not. And now we're not ready to go get on that train. (It's now left, of course)

Oh Wanderbug what a pain ! Hope something works out without too much additional expense.

Mignon, thanks for sharing that photo. Wonderful ! I wish I were there with no need to leave.

A lot of info on trains and planes. What about walking? How is it to leave your hotel and make your way around the city to your tourist sites. Look like you would have to walk in the street (pictures) and that with only narrowly cleared by tire tracks in the snow and ice.
So if I am not leaving to the airport or to any destination on a train, how is it to get around the city and do the things that I am there to do?
Maybe chaos does not apply, but difficult walking it certainly looks.
