Small town near Munich airport for last day/overnight

Hi, After 4 nights in the city center of Munich and 2 nights in Nuremburg, we are looking for a smaller town within 30-40 minutes of the Munich airport to spend our last day and night before heading home to Chicago. Somewhere not too touristy would be perfect. Any suggestions appreciated! We are traveling mid-August and will have a car. Thanks

We like Freising for just this purpose. It is an attractive small town with a Baroque Chapel at the Domberg (Cathedral on a Hill). It boasts the oldest active brewery - Weihenstephan. Freising is laced with waterways and walking paths. It is a very nice send off from Germany. It is about 15-20 minutes from the airport by cab or bus (from the train station). I might be tempted to turn-in the rental car the day before.

We like Bayerischer Hof Hotel and - for a good meal - the Wirthaus Weißbräu Huber.

Both are an easy walk from the town square.

Landsberg am Lech is about 45 minutes away. Very nice town center, amazing church (Maria Himmelfahrt), rich history. About 35 minutes by train to Munich.

Bad Wörishofen: Spa Town, very beautiful. Lots of gardens and shopping. About 50 minutes by train to Munich.

Hope this helps!

Landsberg am Lech [...] About 35 minutes by train to Munich.
Bad Wörishofen [...] About 50 minutes by train to Munich.

Well, the fastest connections to the airport by train are
- from Landsberg 1:37,
- from Wörishofen 2:01.
I woudln't want to spend the night before departing that far away from the airport. I'd prefer Freising as said above or Erding.

Another vote for Freising. I've spent the night there twice before an early flight from Munich.

Downtown Munich is only about 40 minutes from the airport on the S-Bahn.

I might be tempted to turn-in the rental car the day before.

Actually, since you don't need a car in Munich (in fact it would probably be a hindrance), I would at least return the car when you arrive in Munich. Freising is just a 40 minute S-Bahn ride from downtown.

Or even better, turn in the car when you get to Nürnberg. You really don't need a car in Nürnberg either, and there are direct trains at least hourly between Nürnberg and Munich.
