Skiing Day trips from Munich

My wife, daughter and myself will be in Munich from Dec 12-16th visiting the Christmas markets. We would like spend one of our days there on a ski trip to the Bavarian Alps south of Munich. We have been watching some of the Ski areas south of Munich and it looks like some of them already have light snow coverage or have made snow.

I am looking for any suggestions on single day bus trips that include rentals or in which the gear can be rented at the resort. We would be like the ski resort to be within 2 hours of Munich.

Thanks for you help!

The place that most easily comes to mind is the Zugspitze at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, site of the 1936 Winter Olympics. I'm not sure where you would rent ski equipment (possibly at a ski shop in Munich), but the train from Munich takes you directly to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen train station, which is at the foot of the Zugspitze, in just a little over an hour. The cog rail train, which takes you up the mountain, leaves from the Zugspitzbahn station, which is next to the Bahn station in Garmisch.

Another place, just outside your 2 hr envelope, is Oberstdorf. There is an ALX train leaving Munich at 7:20 and going direct (no changes) to Oberstdorf at 9:39. The station is right in the heart of the town, about a km from the Nebelhorn lift. I would be surprised if there were not plenty of ski rental shops in town near the lift. Actually, there are ski slopes and lift all up and down the Iller valley, the mouth of which, at Immenstadt, you get to in about 2 hrs.

You also have the Innsbruck area that has been home to two Winter Olympics. It is about a 2 hour train ride down there.
I found the skiing best for a strong intermediate skiier or better. The view from the top of the Alps in Tirol is absolutely breathtaking.

When we lived in Munich the two ski areas we went to regularly were Spitzingsee and Brauneck. They are lower elevation and sometimes the snow is not that great but they are very close as both are within one hour of Munich. We always drove but I know the BOB train has day train ticket-lift ticket combo offers. There was always a place to rent gear near the lifts.

The Alpen Plus website has info on these ski areas (sorry it is all in German so you'll have to translate if you can't read it). Looking at the ski report summary right now Spitzingsee has 6 or 10 lifts open with 7km of ski runs open and Brauneck has 1 of 16 but no ski runs open (although looking at the webcam I see there are still some hard core folks skiing today).

The BOB train combo ticket info can be found in this link. Its a pretty good deal that include the train travel plus an all day lift pass for at Adults: 49,50 €, Teenagers: 47,00 €, Children: 27,00 €

Hope this helps.

I should add with the BOB train offer you have to transfer to a bus (included in the ticket) from the train station to the lift areas but it should be pretty strait forward as the bus typically meets the train. Also, there is space for ski equipment on the BOB train so you could in theory rent equipment in Munich before you leave but I'm not sure if that saves you any money plus you'd have to lug the stuff around all day.
