Size of beds on typical tours

Hello, we're thinking of joining one of Rick's tours but I have a silly question. How big are the beds typically? My husband is 6'4" tall and not slim, and I am 5'10. We aren't going to be comfortable in anything much smaller than a queen bed. I have always researched and booked my own accommodations but Rick's tours sound fantastic. Thanks in advance!

I don't know if you can ask for a larger bed or not. Our rooms either had two twins pushed together or or we had a double. Give the office a call to find out what you might be able to work out.

2 metres long, 0.9m wide beds are standard in Germany. Your husband is 1.93 metres so better ask the hotel/B&B if they have a 2.2m×1m bed for him. These are common, too. Queen-size beds are not too common in German hotels. They sometimes have them, but only one queen-size bed per room, intended for two persons to sleep in.

We also have this problem. My husband is tall and can be very uncomfortable in a small bed. I seem to remember that when we took our RS tour you can request single beds or doubles. We requested the singles (twin beds) and they we large enough and very comfortable.

In German, in 1, 2, & 3 star hotels, unless they tell you before booking, double beds must must be at least 1,9 m 6'3") long by 1,8 m (5'11") wide. That's 11 inches wider, but about 4 inches shorter than an American queen. For 4 and 5 stars, it must be longer, 2,0 m (6'7"). Any starred hotel can have "French" beds (American full size), but they must tell you before booking that the beds are not full sized doubles.

In other words, the beds are wider than a queen, almost as wide as a king, but 1 to 5 inches shorter than either.

But that is only in Germany, and only for DEHOGA starred hotels. In my experience, most hotels in Germany do not bother with DEHOGA ratings, but most non-starred hotels I've stayed in had at least the 6'3" long double.

carole, you definitely should call the RS tour office and talk to them about it. I think the problem with getting a good answer is that there is no "typical" tour. I believe that they don't know for sure much ahead of time, what hotels they will be using on a given tour. Then, they are somewhat at the mercy of the hotels' room availability.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Sounds like contacting the tour office when we know the dates we want will be the smart thing to do.
