Sim Card in Germany

I am thinking about purchasing a sim card, not a e-sim) I will be in Germany for 3 weeks. I just need data, but I am under the impression that a phone number will still be provided, even though I have no use for it. I am looking for recommendations for a mobile company to purchase it from. Thanks.

Germany has tons of wifi spots, so is a sim really necessary?

There are pure data tariffs available. Registration process with ID is necessary.

Below the tariff sellers you will find four network providers. For data Telekom and Vodafone network show the best results (see result table from 2024).

Check congstar (Telekom) or Freenet (all networks) for tariffs. Some recommend discounter tariffs from Aldi or Lidl.

Thanks for the information, I will take a look. I am looking for a private network, as I may want to use my credit card for payment and I don't trust the public wifi areas, whether in a hotel, shopping mall etc.

I have not used them, but BNEsim will sell either SIM or Esim. They cover some 68 countries, including Germany. Data for Germany is 1.49 Euros/Gb. for a Germany data plan, or 2.09/Gb for a non-expiring dataplan (you give them some money and can keep using the service until the money is gone.). They do not include a phone number. They say they use VODAFONE, O2, and E-PLUS networks.
