Sightseeing by car between Garmisch and Munich

Hi all. We will be spending 3 days in the Gar-P area before heading up to Munich for 4 days to complete our 3 week European vacation. We will have a car during our stay in Bavaria and are planning a leisurely drive north into Munich before dropping off the car at the Munich Hauptbahnhof and taking the train into the city. We're wondering if there are any particular points of interest between Garmisch and Munich that would justify the drive by car versus just taking the train into Munich and eliminate the hassle of driving into Munich. Suggestions?

Sammy- the Munich Hauptbahnhof is very close to the center of the city of Munich. Check out a map of Munich...

Check the website for the rental car company you are using. They will show locations along the edge of Munich where you can drop off the car. Some are probably close to train or transit lines. Assuming that you have been there a few days and not knowing what you will have already seen by then, I would recommend that you drop the car in Garmisch and take the train to Munich.

I agree with Roy. It is much easier to take the train into Munich from Garmisich than to drive. I don't want to pry into your plans or maybe you posted it on another topic in the forum (sorry haven't been on lately) but in my experience living in Germany it was much easier and hassle free to get around via the public transportation system than take a car if you plan right.

Thanks for the responses and insight. I guess I should have provided more detail on our itinerary in my initial post. We're beginning our journey in Rome, then traveling north to Venice and on to Lake Como (Varenna). We then travel to the Bernese Oberland and over to Mittenwald (our home base in Bavaria). We will be travelling by train throughout our journey until we arrive in Mittenwald where will rent a car and visit Ludwigshafen castles, hike the Zugspitze, enjoy the beauty of the area and take in the Bavarian culture. We'll enjoy 2 full days in the area before travelling on to Munich. We want to enjoy the spontaneity that comes with travelling by car and would look to take an indirect and "off the beaten path" route to get us to Munich (or perhaps somewhere on the outskirts where we could drop the car off and train into Munich). Looking at maps of the area there appears to be a number of routes we could take to get us into Munich, but not being familiar with the area I'm looking to this forum for suggestions. One option I'm considering Is the route 23 through Oberammergau and then over towards lake Ammersee or lake Starnberg. If anyone has driven any of these circuitous routes and can recommend one (or two) in particular, I would love to hear about it!

I don't see how you can do all that in two days, but if you are determined to try, you can rent the car in Garmisch. A one day rental would be around $100, compared to about $30 a day for a weekly rental. For two days, the rental price will be nearly as much as for a week. Check prices on the Europcar website. I don't think gemut.com or Autoeurope would want to bother with that brief a rental.

Yeah, two days isn't much time for what you have planned. Bad weather could also through a monkey wrench in the works.

Just so that you're aware, actually hiking the Zugspitze involves some technical climbs and you need to be well equipped. It isn't a leisurely stroll. But some of the surrounding peaks and pistes can give you a much easier walk.

I'm at work now, but I could give you some suggestools when I get home.

Actually I have traveled to Dubai last year and this was unforgettable experience. Dubai tourist attractions makes your trip amazing. So when you travel there, I can advise you ^-^

Thanks Tom and others for your feedback. I would agree that our 2-day itinerary in the Mittenwald/Gar-P area of probably overly optimistic, and to be honest we haven't yet fine-tuned our planned activities yet but will likely whittle it down to something much more realistic and manageable. By the way, we have no intention of actually hiking the Zugspitze - we'll likely just take the tram to the top and take in the views and sights. We may instead hike the Partnach Gorge in Gar-P as an alternative...it sounds amazing. I also neglected to mention the timing of our travel - we'll be in the Gar-P area in early July, so hopefully weather won't be an issue for us. Again, my goal is to gain some advice and insight into the drive between Gar-P and Munich - something well off the beaten path versus the more direct (and perhaps less scenic) route. We are planning on making a full day of this excursion ... if it makes sense. We're travelling with teenagers and I think they'll actually appreciate the "down time" just sitting in the car and taking it all in.

It depends on how far east or west you want to drive before heading toward Munich, as well as how many sites you visit the day before. Stick with the B routes as much as possible to enjoy the countryside and small towns. Stop in Ettal, of course, since it is just north of G-P. Then there's Linderhof and Oberammergau. From there you could go west to Neuschwanstein and then north to Wieskirche. If you are into 20th century art, Murnau might be worth a stop. Close to Munich is Andechs, a popular site on beer pilgrimages, but set aside an extra hour, at minimum, or have a designated driver if you plan to stop there.

Hi Sammy,

We've made stops at Andech's twice on the way to Munich. I'm not a beer drinker, but still enjoyed lunch and a huge pretzel in the beer garden. My wife had a beer or two. Very pretty, ornate church at Andechs that's worth seeing.
