Any recommendations for scenic day side trips from Munich in July that are less than 1.5 hours of train travel each way? Thanks for your thoughts.
Salzburg is a good one and Bamberg, The ride to Salzburg is more scenic. The average travel time between Munich and Salzburg is 1h48 minutes. The quickest route is 1h28 minutes.
Salzburg and Bamberg are both more than 1.5 hrs away even by high speed train.
Closer popular options are Regensburg, Landshut, Augsburg or Nuremberg. Just one hour south of Munich are many fine village lined lakes with great views of the Alps.

Herrenchiemsee is reached by taking a direct train from Munich to Prien (1 hour from Munich.) A ferry crossing gets you to Ludwig II's island palace.

We had stayed in Salzburg last year, and to include Heilbrunn Palace and Mt Untersberg, our favorite sites, the area required more than a day for us. Thanks a bunch, Russ for the Herrenchiemsee suggestion. We are going to go there now instead of Neuschwanstein. Thanks DJ for your suggestions, which we were unfamiliar with, but will now also visit. We are also doing a day trip to the zugspitze, so our week is set. Your suggestions are helpful and appreciated.
