Besides Potsdam and Whittenberg, I'd like recommendations for side trips / day trips from Berlin. We are based in Berlin so we are looking for things to see that allow us to return each night to our base hotel. Thanks
If you consider Wittenberg, give the nearby Garden Realm of Dessau-Wörlitz a look too.
Hi,
Assuming you are going by train, I can suggest numerous places from Berlin within a two and a quarter hour radius for these day/side trips. Depending on your interest you can choose Leipzig, Magdeburg, Halle an der Salle, Dresden, Naumburg an der Salle, Neuruppin (small town) Frankfurt an der Oder, or Seelow (esp if you want to see war memorial/museum site)
With the exception of Seelow, all others listed here have to do with German cultural history as regards to music and German literature. There is also Schwerin (almost 2.5 hrs) and much shorter from Berlin is Neustrelitz, which used to be known as Mecklenburg-Strelitz if you're into Prussian history. Both Wittenberg and Potsdam are well worth your time. Take any one of the tours from across the street of Potsdam Hbf. then you can go back Neues Palais or another major site by bus. Across the street from Potsdam Hbf is a bus depot signs point to which bus for which particular sight.
I do the same as you, ie, take the side trip and return to base at night in Berlin, the Pension which I book for a full week's stay or longer.
You should go to Dahlem. It a district in Berlin but it's far off the Center and it's just beautiful. Amazing view, and houses, and they have lots of museums it's very relaxing to spend the day there. You can get there by train very easily.
There are some good suggestions in here too. www.routeperfect.com/itineraries/berlin-and-its-surroundings-friends-trip.html
Have fun :)
