Side trip from Munich to Rothenberg and Nuremburg

Hi all - I will be in Munich for an extra day or two and would like to take a side trip to Rothenberg and possibly Nuremburg. Can I do one, or both of those, in a day trip or would I need to spend the night in either one. I think I will need to return to Munich for a flight to Marseilles. Also, what would be the best transportation option for my side trip - bus or train? Should I buy tickets ahead of time or when I arrive in Munich? So many questions...sorry! Thanks for all the help!

Nürnberg is a much closer side trip, only one hour each way by direct train from Munich.

See the train schedule site recommended on your France question, which in this case does sell German train tickets and will show you both the advance-discount rate and the full fare that you might pay in the station.

The Romantic Road bus only runs once daily in each direction, so you'd probably stay overnight in Rothenburg, even if you were taking the bus one way and train the other. Train takes 3.5-4 hours each way, with two easy connections.

As Laura states, Nuremberg is much easier to get to. I would give Regensburg some thought. Either one by train. I don't know how much you save when buying tickets in advance, if you wait for the day of travel you can get a Bayern Ticket after 9:00 am, 28 euros or so for the day I believe? Use the Bahn website, very easy.

I am a fan of Rothenburg but it is a cumbersome, long day trip by public transportation. Plus it is nicest in the late evening for us. We just spent 2 nights there.

The suggestion of Regensburg is a good possibility for a day trip. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its medieval buildings. It has a range of buildings from its gothic cathedral to the Baroque Alte Kappele to the former Roman gate, Porta Praetoria (sp). There is the Thurn & Taxis palace in a former abbey. I best enjoy just strolling through its narrow alleyways. We are in Regensburg now.
