Short Layover at Cologne Airport

I will be flying into the Cologne airport coming from Dubrovnik. We will have a 1 hour 10 minute layover before boarding our flight to Salzburg, We are flying Eurowings, and both flights will be one ticket. I understand that I will need to go thru immigration since I am coming from a non-schengen country. Does that also mean I have to collect any checked bags or will they go directly to my destination? It does appear that Eurowings uses Terminal 1 only so I would not have to change terminals. I am unfamiliar with this airport. Does this leave me enough time? Thanks in advance for your help!

Have you bought the tickets? Flying Dubrovnik-Salzburg via Cologne is quite a detour, more than twice the direct distance. If I were you I'd take a direct flight to Munich or Vienna instead and a train from there.

But yes, you go through immigration when you enter the Schengen area. But customs at your final destination. And if the airline will sell you the ticket, they think the connection is doable.

Terry, Eurowings provides info about one-stop flights. Since you are not connecting in Berlin, your bags will go through to your destination.

You will have to go through security at Cologne as you are arriving from a non-Schengen country.

I would never recommend 70 minutes connecting time. First you don't really have 70 minutes. Your flight to Salzburg will probably close 15 minutes before departure. So you really have 55 minutes. This is also not including the time it takes you to deboard your inbound aircraft. That could be 5-10 minutes. Now you're down to 45-50 minutes.

Your inbound from Croatia could be late, both the passport control line & security line could be long depending on the # of flights that arrived ahead of yours and the # of people they have on staff at both lines. You also aren't including the walking time from the inbound flight to the security line as well as passport control and then walking to the gate for your flight to Salzburg. That all could be 10 minutes if you walk quickly. So what you thought is 70 minutes of connecting time could now be just 35-45 minutes.

Since it looks like you've already bought your tickets, either roll the dice that your inbound from Dubrovnik will be VERY early or you spend the money to change one of your tickets.

Thanks for the info. We have not bought our tickets as of yet. I think we will look at flying into Munich instead and renting a car from there. The only reason why I was looking at flying to Salzburg was because it got us to Salzburg around 1, giving us most of the day there to explore.

A direct flight to Munich sounds like the best way in my opinion. Although I would take the train to Salzburg and don't bother with a car.

That sounds like a good option. I do want awhile we are in Salzburg, as we will be heading into Berchtesgarden, Hallstatt and Werfen. Where are the rental car locations in Salzburg?

Berchtesgarden, Hallstatt and Werfen are all easy to reach by train, so you really don't need a car. And in case of Hallstatt, you really want to take the train there as the railway station is on the other side of the lake and connected to the village by a ferry.

You haven't....but you wrote this:

"We will have a 1 hour 10 minute layover before boarding our flight to

Ahhhh, a bit confusing when you wrote you will have a 70 minute layover and the flights will be on one ticket. You didn't say you were only CONSIDERING this itinerary! LOL

Sorry for the confusing and misleading post. Have decided now to fly directly to Vienna, which is quite a bit cheaper. Then we will take the train to Salzburg . A much better option. Thanks for all the advice!
