We plan to drive from Strasbourgh to Colmar, France and are considering an additional trip to the Black Forest. Has anyone driven the Scenic drive out of Freiburg, Germany through St. Margen and St. Peter? Is this a fair representation of the area and how long is the drive without stops? Is it worth a stop in St. Peter for lunch and a bit of a stroll?
Going on memory here of a trip approximately 20 years ago. St. Peter - There's not a lot there, but it is exceedingly beautiful in this area, especially the drive (spectacular drive) south from St. Peter along Rte. 500 (though this is out of the way for you with your Colmar destination). Hotel zur Sonne in St. Peter is an excellent place to eat - great food and ambience (though a bit pricey if memory serves). It looks like the Freiburg to St. Peter diversion takes you appx. 1.5 hours (one way) out of your way. If it were I, I would take the diversion (but that's just me), especially knowing what I know now of this specific area. Not specifically familiar (though the way to Rte 500 referenced above may be on the way from St. Peter to St. Margen) with the Freiburg>St. Margen>St. Peter route that you referenced, but I am sure it is as beautiful (drive between Upper (I think that's the correct designation) Glottertal to St. Peter is spectacular) as the Rte. 500 route (on the way to Switzerland) mentioned above. Hopefully, someone with better local knowledge will chime in. Hope this helps, if even just a little. Have a great trip.
Nearby, but not the two towns you mentioned. Last year we drove from Schiltach & Triberg through Freiburg im Breisgau then spent a night in Staufen im Breisgau. From there we went to Eguisheim, followed by Colmar. En route we made a short stop in Neuf-Brisach to walk the old fort’s walls. While the drive was pretty I can’t say there was anything unique about the countryside that could only be seen in that area. Maybe there is between the towns you mentioned.
If you're going to tour around that part of the Alsace i highly recommend you visit Mount Sainte Odile.
