Shopping and staying near Frankfurt, Germany

Hi. We’re going to be in Germany for several months this year, and are planning to stay somewhere in or near Frankfurt.

First, I’m looking for the following types of stores in or near Frankfurt:

  1. Any large Baumarkt or do-it-yourself supercenter that sells lumber, particle board, plywood, etc., and that will cut it all for you while you wait. I know there are OBI and Toom stores in and near Frankfurt, but I don’t know whether they will cut lumber and plywood for customers.

  2. A large consumer goods store (much like Walmart in the USA) that sells a wide variety of things, like camping supplies, pots and pans, plates, silverware, plastic storage bins, food supplies, clothing, and so on. A friend suggested Rewe, but I’m not familiar with what they sell.

  3. A specialty outdoor/camping/sporting goods store like Globe Trotters or Decathlon.

Second, I’m looking for a nice suburb to stay in, a safe, mostly-residential area, someplace close to (but preferably outside) the city, that would be a good base from which to reach a selection of the above types of stores. In other words, I’d like to find a location that’s near to all the above types of stores, but also that is a nice area with hotels, restaurants, and is very safe to walk around in at night. Finally, this suburb should have a direct metro or train line to the center of Frankfurt. (Note that we’ll have a car, and will be able to drive to the stores, but prefer not to drive into the center for sightseeing, and would instead take public transportation for that purpose.)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Trying to think of an unsafe area to walk at night in Germany and I'm coming up short.

Any large Baumarkt or do-it-yourself supercenter that sells lumber, particle board, plywood, etc., That would be Bauhaus. Very similar to Home Depot or Lowe's.

A large consumer goods store (much like Walmart in the USA) that sells a wide variety of things, like camping supplies, pots and pans, plates, silverware, plastic storage bins, food supplies, clothing, and so on. A friend suggested Rewe, but I’m not familiar with what they sell. Rewe is a grocery store. A good one, but not what you're looking for. Try Real instead.

A specialty outdoor/camping/sporting goods store like Globe Trotters or Decathlon. I know exactly what you have in mind, and I can picture the store branch in Mannheim, but I can't remember the name! The word "Trek" might be in there somewhere. Otherwise, you can get some of that stuff at Jack Wolfskin and Engelhorn, but these specialize more in outdoor wear than equipment.

I’d like to find a location that’s near to all the above types of stores, but also that is a nice area with hotels, restaurants, and is very safe to walk around in at night. You tend to find Bauhaus and Real in the big-box retail and manufacturing districts that rim the edges of cities and large towns. These areas become dead zones at night. Jack Wolfskin and Engelhorn are a little more upscale, so they tend to be located in shopping malls or the pedestrian-free shopping high streets in the middle of cities.

There are certain areas/districts I know of in Berlin where I would not want to find myself solo at night, not to say something negative would surely take place but there is a greater chance than elsewhere in the city, such as Ahrensfelde S-Bahn station, Marzahn, maybe Pankow....not to mention Duisburg Hbf and its area.

Just googling an area close to the airport is Dreieich seems to have big-box stores, hotels, train station with Regional and S-bahn's into Frankfurt. Globe Trotters is next to the Frankfurt Ostbahnhof.

  1. There are a number of stores like this you could go to, OBI, Praktiker, or Toom Baumarkt.
  2. You might have to visit several stores for those items. The pots and pans may not be at the same store as food supplies and clothing. Metro has all of those, but you need a card to get in there. Euro stores have cheap dishes, plastic containers and pots and pans. They are often found around the main train station or in neighborhoods like Höchst, Bornheim, or Bockenheim. You could also hit one of the flea markets held on Sat. Every other week they are on the Main on the Sachsenhausen side of the river and the other weeks near the Ost Harbor on Lindley strasse. There you will find all the dishes, pots, pans and silverware, etc. you would need and for cheap prices.
  3. Globetrotters near the new ECB is fabulous. 4 floors of delight.

There aren't any unsafe areas or neighborhoods here. What kind of a budget are you looking for, do you want an apt. type place like a Ferien Wohnung, or a hotel? Public transportation abounds. There are buses, trams and trains going everywhere.
For suburbs outside of the city check out Kronberg, Bad Homburg, Oberursel, or Königstein. For residential neighborhoods in Frankfurt check out Bornheim, Höchst, or Sachsenhausen.
