Hello, we are traveling to Germany in September with our 2 kids (8yo & 5yo). We are flying in and out of Frankfurt, as we are visiting family in the area. The plan as of now is to spend a few days in the Frankfurt area with day trips, then an overnight in Rothenburg, Legoland (gotta keep the kids happy), then a few days in Garmisch. We have a couple of empty days before we need to be back in Frankfurt and curious where we should go in between. The Weltenburg Abbey caught my attention, but wasn’t sure if there was more in the area worth seeing. Considered the Ingolstadt Volkfest since timing lines up, or maybe driving back through the Black Forest. We will have a car. Thanks in advance for your advice!
The Black Forest would require quite a detour. There are many other nice places you might visit on the way from Garmisch back to Frankfurt, so many that you will need to provide some guidance... What sorts of things would you enjoy seeing/doing?
Weltenburg Abbey is not far from Regensburg and also the Altmühl River Valley with its Castles,
The cruises to Weltenburg Abbey start from Kelheim with a small and nice historic center 30km south of Regensburg
Kelheim is where the Altmühl River/Canal flows into the Danube River. Liberation Hall above the town worth a visit
On the Altmühl there are several small villages with castles worth visting like Essing and ruins of Burg Randeck (7km from Kelheim)
Riedenburg with Burg Prunn and Schloss Rosenburg with Falconary (8km from Essing)
Riedenburg has also a small market square with hotels and cafes and tourist info , a crystal museum and of course a wonderful beergarden ;o)
(for more details on the castles just ask)
Take the kids to see dinosaurs:

I have not been to the Bayreuth one, but the one in Holzmaden is fantastic.
And definitely go to Ingolstadt for the fest!
Have you considered Munich? My kids enjoyed it. The science museum is really terrific, and they liked exploring the Englischer Gardens park and just wandering the city.
If they’re into cars at all, there’s an unusual but interesting place called Motor World.
Just north of Frankfurt is http://www.saalburgmuseum.de/ a reconstructed Roman fort. Kids might find it interesting, especially if the summertime events with reenactors are still going on while you are there.
