September Romantic Road, BlackForest, Zurich

Hi, we are a party of 6 flying in to Frankfurt in Sept. We intent to cover Romantic Road, Black Forest and over to Zurich for our departing flight. Total of 15 days on land. We do not have to visit all the towns, Would appreciate advise on how to plan our travel, whether by driving and/or train. If commuting by train, is group ticket for 6pax available? Especially from Romantic Road to Black Forest which is the fastest and easiest connection? Which town to stay along the way? We prefer to avoid touristy towns. Thank you.

If you do rent a car, drop it in Germany before crossing into Switzerland. that will save an international drop fee plus the need for a Swiss vignette sticker which costs 40 CHF. Depending on your route, that could be in Freiburg, Singen or Lindau.

6 people with luggage is going to require a large van, and they are pricey.

Group Laender or Quer durchs Land tickets are only available up to 5 people, but you can get two 3-person tickets and still save money over individual tickets.

Would appreciate advise on how to plan our travel...

Your train/car choice might depend on your specific destinations (which we do not know) and your group's participants (whose preferences, ages, physical abilities/limitations, etc. we also do not know.)

We (couple) will soon be traveling by train for 15 days to some smaller towns in both northern and southern Germany and in Austria. We prefer not to change locations all the time, so we have booked our accommodations in 3 separate towns with 4-5 nights in each town. Then we will take short round-trip outings by train on some of those days to other small towns of interest in the area. This planning strategy has worked well for us for many years. For larger groups like yours, this approach can be very advantageous since finding different accommodations for a party of 6 persons every 1-2 nights can be a huge challenge, especially in September, a very popular month for tourists.

We prefer to avoid touristy towns.

The Black Forest and the Romantic Road each contain some touristy towns. You will probably want to AVOID Rothenburg and Füssen on the Romantic Road. One nice and less-touristy part of the Romantic Road that is well served by train is this one, not far from the RR town of Augsburg; it includes Noerdlingen, Harburg and Donauwoerth:

Consider a stopover in Lindau.

FRA AIRPORT: When you land here, you are very close to one of Germany's best venues for small old-world towns and natural scenery... the "Romantic Rhine," betweenKoblenz and Bingen. It's very easy to reach by train and there are train lines for exploring on both sides of the river; day cruise boats also connect the Rhine towns. Maybe you should book here for a few nights.
