September Itinerary for Two Weeks

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Germany in September 2023. We plan on arriving on September 8 and leaving September 23. Our plan is to stay in the southern half of Germany. The plan is to buy the German Rail Twin Pass Flexi, but unsure whether we should do the 10 day or 15 day.

Day 1: Arrive in Frankfurt airport and take the train to Mannheim. We're spending the day in Mannheim meeting old friends and plan on staying the night here.

Day 2-4: Travel to Bad Duerkheim in the morning, go to Wurstmarkt in the evening. Next morning do a hike in the area and spend most of the day in Wurstmarkt seeing everything it has to offer. Morning of Day 4 we plan on taking the train to Lake Konstanz.

Day 4-8: We will arrive in Lake Konstanz in the afternoon/evening of our 4th day. While here we plan on taking a Zeppelin tour of the area and visiting Schloss Mainau. Other than those two attractions, this portion of the trip is really spent just relaxing around the lake. May do another hike in the area or hop over to Lichtenstein for a day. On the last day we plan on taking trains to Munich

Day 8-11: Plan on arriving in Munich in the afternoon/evening and visiting one of the beer halls. Days 9 & 10 are going to be spent around Theresinwiese for the opening weekend of Oktoberfest. We are going to try and catch the parade and spend the two days seeing everything and enjoying the beer tents. We have already got our hotels booked for these dates as well. On the 11th day we are planning to take a train to either Innsbruck or Salzburg.

Day 11-14: This portion of the trip is still undecided in what we are going to be doing. We want to go to Austria for a couple days, but up in the air about visiting Innsbruck or visiting Salzburg. Any insight or suggestions between which destination would be better is welcomed.

Day 14-16: Plan on spending the last few days back in Munich with no real set plan on what to do for the one full day we have left (Day 15). Might spend the time exploring more of the city or making a day trip to Dachau. Day 16 we head to Munich airport and then fly back home.

Between Innsbruck and Salzburg, which is the better city to spend a few days in during the middle of September? This is the only portion of the trip we're unsure of the destination. We both enjoy outdoor activities and like museums (art, history, anything of interest) a good bit. The German Rail Twin Pass Flexi seems to be our best option for the trip, but as mentioned earlier don't know if we should get the 10 day or 15 day. We plan on using local transportation while in each place, and I believe that many local trains/trams are included in the German Rail Pass. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there anything that we should see or do while in any of the above cities that was left out?

I have not been to Innsbruck but will say that Salzburg is delightful. I will always urge anyone to go there….a walk around the city on the old city wall, an inexpensive yet world-class concert in the old fortress there, the shopping strip-street filled with charm, the pumpkin soup at the Fox Inn, a walk through Mirabell Gardens, taking a SOM tour….yes, you will want to see those film sites and hear that music…..and a nice few minutes to sit in one of their squares to watch the world go by…….we spent the night of our 45th wedding anniversary eating a HUGE meringue-type dessert at the oldest inn in Salzburg….I can DM you the info if you want more details…..and even a side trip to Hallstatt!

I too have not been to Innsbruck, but have been to Salzburg in mid September. Loved it! We did an Eagles Nest tour for a day. Then when we were there a few weeks ago we did a SOM tour with Bobs Special Tours which was excellent. They give you the real story behind the Von Trapp family and give you lots of filming details etc. we also did a cooking class with Edelweiss Cooking which was very good.

I'd recommend a few nights in Salzburg , along with a day trip to the incredibly beautiful Berchtesgaden area. (It's about an hour bus ride outside of Salzburg.) I find the old town area of Salzburg to be magical, friendly, walkable, safe and beckoning. You can explore the Fortress, the Cathedral, the music of Mozart , beer garden, Mirabell gardens, and the Red Bull museum, as starters. I much prefer Salzburg to Munich.
I haven't been to Innsbruck so can't comment on this town.
Have a great trip, and you have obviously already put in many hours of careful research. Safe travels.

Salzburg

Neither rail pass unless you get some super deal. You are only doing 1 train ride of any distance. The Lander tickets ( Bavaria ticket, etc. ) is what will work for most of your train rides.

Stephen's caution about purchasing the GRP - flexi, flexi-twin, whatever - is spot on. Right now you're staring down a transport package of either €622 or €854 for that. But even 10 days of rail travel is going to be complete overkill. And at the same time, it will be inadequate for local transport.

All the TRAIN journeys you have in mind are largely doable by regional train; the day tickets (such as the Länder Tickets mentioned by stephen) for these train trips price out at €30-€40 per travel day per couple as a rule, depending on the day pass type. They work very much like rail pass days on a rail pass - travel wherever you like that day - with certain small but important differences...

  • You don't have to commit to or buy a "bundle" of travel days like the GRP requires. Just buy one at a time. No advance purchase needed.

  • Generally speaking, with day tickets you achieve unlimited travel within a certain area or region (which your plans already seem to call for) rather than within the entire country.

  • These day tickets permit you to use not only regional trains but also buses, trams, subways, etc. within local transport areas (Munich for example) whereas a German Rail pass excludes these additional modes of transport and is pretty useless within cities. Anyone with a mere (but expensive) rail pass will need to purchase such transport separately anyway. And often, a local day trip costs even less than the day ticket will.

  • Some day tickets permit travel only from 9 am onward when it's a weekday; others have no such restriction.

Here are a few links for you to better inform yourself... your travel will take place largely within Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

Thanks all for the suggestions! Salzburg seems to be the place to go! The Länder Tickets (day tickets) just by the day seem like the better option as well, thanks Russ and Suki for the explanations!

"Plan on arriving in Munich in the afternoon/evening and visiting one of the beer halls"

I would skip that becasue you are going to Oktoberfest anyway which is a giant beer hall. When you are lucky and the weather is good you should rather stroll around downtown in the direction of the English Garden. For dinner you could visit a beer garden or just sit outside a nice little restaurant.

Oktoberfest is a big party and relaxing the day before is just the right thing to do.
I would really watch the opening parade on Saturday and later on spend the afternoon/evening at the Oktoberfest. On Sunday there will be another parade - Trachtenumzug.

While I love Salzburg, Berchtesgaden and the entire area, IF you’d like some incredible alpine scenery I’d say Innsbruck. Very nice old town surrounded by towering alpine peaks. A day trip to Mittenwald, Germany is very easy from here too. Stayed by Innsbruck on five trips. Mittenwald is like an alpine village postcard come to life. Just an opinion.
