We will be traveling from Wroclaw, Poland to Dresden, Germany in May 2015 on a German train and would like to stop ( with our luggage ) for about 2 hours in Goerlitz. Is this a realistic plan ? Are there large lockers at.the train station ? Can we walk to the old city from the train station ? Any feedback would be helpful ?
The direct trains from Wroclaw to Goerlitz and Dresden run 6 hours apart, so I think you have more time. The station does have lockers mentioned online.
Hi,
"...realistic plan?" That depends on you. For me it is realistic. Walking 20 mins from the train station after putting away the luggage is no problem. Taking a day trip that is a ca. 2 hr radius may not be within your definition of a day trip. It wouldn't bother me, just take the early train from Wroclaw. I would plan on arriving in Dresden at 19:00 or so. I've not done this particular day trip but have done others with the same factors, ie, total time from station to Altstadt 40-45 mins, ditching luggage in lockers, getting to the final destination at 1900 or 2000 after the day trip. Since your trip is in May, I would do this day trip to Görlitz. Both train rides are direct, makes it even better.
First of all there are plenty of trains from Görlitz to Dresden so you can stay as long as you want. From the train station you take tram lines 2 or 3 into the old city. Tram ride is approx. 10 minutes one-way. Various German websites confirm there are some lockers at the station.
