Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Visit

Hi all,

What is your opinion on Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern? Worth a visit? Is it a busy tourist sport in summer, etc ?

Thanks

Nate the German Baltic Sea coast and its surroundings is one of THE summer holiday destinations in Germany. Of course it will be crowded. But I would still go to Schwerin because it's definitely worth visiting :-)

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is absolutely worth some visits, not just one. Depending on your interests you will find various offers at different locations. As already mentioned the coast is a real highlight with islands Rügen and Usedom. A very new highlight is the Königsstuhl sky walk on Rügen.

Schwerin is worth a visit as well, especially Schwerin castle.

On my way to Scandinavia last year I was very positively impressed about Stralsund which changed a lot to a larger pearl at the Eastern Baltic Sea of Germany.

By the way: From Rügen in summer there is a turbo ferry which brings you in 2 1/2 hours to Trelleborg in Sweden. Also spending 1-2 days on Denmark's Bornholm with ferry from Sassnitz (Rügen) is a real nice experience.

Absolutely worth a visit. Castle is interesting, grounds attractive. City center is charming.

Staatliches Museum Schwerin is excellent, but appears to be closed for refurbishing until fall 2024.

I would expect tourist crowds in summer. Northern Germany doesn't tend to get as full as Bavaria. Americans don't seem to have discovered the area.

Northern Germany doesn't tend to get as full as Bavaria.

That hasn't been true for quite a while now - that changed soon after the reunification.

With 94.3 million nights spent in hotels, hostels or clinics, Bavaria has the most visitors. With 18.472 nights per 1.000 inhabitants, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has the highest density of tourists per population .... and last one is causing the 'problem'.
In Bavaria the tourists are spread out while in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the relatively short coast line and the few towns are overcrowded.

Americans don't seem to have discovered the area.

That's true but the region is already suffering from overtourism. It's a pity for the Americans who are consistently removing this area from the map but it's too crowded in the high season anyway already today.

Apparently we Germans know something Americans don't seem to!

Every German knows to look at when various states get out of school to plan for traffic, particularly when driving north to the coast. Every person in Hamburg knows which dates mean the tunnel will be worse than normal (and it has awful traffic any day already).

Anyway, Schwerin and indeed MeckPomm is always worth a visit!

It is not busy. You can also add Luebeck, Wismar, Bad Doberan, Rostock, Stralsund with Ruegen and Greifswald and Oder surroundings (Wolgast, Usedom, Świnoujście, Międzyzdroje, Wolin, Kamień Pomorski, Stepnica, Szczecin, Police, Trzebież, Nowe Warpno, Ueckermuende, Anklam) - that is good for the further transportation (https://www.travellerspoint.com/guide/Szczecin/).
